Mac Pro 64bit

Recommended Posts

First, I'm new to the whole Mac OS and have virtually zero knowledge on how to run Windows apps on it. i.e., I found out what Bootcamp is just today. But don't know much else.

I just found out that Bootcamp for the new Mac Pro (Leopard OSX) doesn't run in 64bit. Then found out that 64bit Windows apps CAN be run on Mac using either something called 'Parallels' or 'VMWare'??? I'm researching these options now. but was hoping someone here could give me some feedback on how either of these are performing for you when running 3dsMax on a Mac Pro.

Thanks.

the new 64 bit Leopard has a new bootcamp. progs like parallels and so forth shell between the 2 os's without a reboot. this takes up valuable resources and slows things down.

I'd personally install the new bootcamp, then install XP64 or vista64 and do it that way.

It's not a great idea. VMWare seems to give you more than Parallels, or at least it did last time I looked into it - it supported 64-bit and multiple cores, and Parallels didn't - but you've still got to split your system RAM between Windows and OSX, you lose CPU power and you can not use hardware accelerated 3D display. Bootcamp is the only way to go for pro 3D apps on a Mac running Windows.

There are people running 64-bit in Bootcamp, it's a little bit more challenging because you've got to find drivers, but they talk about these things on discussions.apple.com
