Rconce01
Guys I will be buying a new workstation soon. Dell version of the Precision T5400 with dual xeons quad core E5420 rated at 2.5 ghz per core, 4gb of ram and xp 64 bit with a 512 mb fx1700 video card. This setup runs 3,800 with no monitors The only major difference that I noticed with the next model up is that the T7400 supports 64gb quad channel ddr2 memory while this one supports only 32 gb quad channel ddr2 memory. Any clue what this means? By the way this is an upgrade from a precision 470 with two single core xeons at 3.0ghz and a 32 bit operating system
Tommy L
32 or 64 gig of ram is a fairly redundant question. You will never need 32, let alone 64. If theres a price difference, go with the 5400.
AJLynn
You probably can't even get Dell's motherboard to take the 64GB, let alone afford to pay for it. These FBDIMMs are still expensive.

As far as performance will the dual xeon quad core produce more or less 20 ghz of processor power compared to the 6.0 ghz i am running now with the dual xeon single core's. AJLynn
I don't really know what the spec you're referring to is, so I could be wrong, but I do know that all those quad-core Xeons are 64-bit compatible and all support more than 4GB RAM, though you'd have to confirm the max with Dell. Slinger
The dell mobo can support up to 64gigs of ram...they use risers to do it, just like they do to run dual Quadro5600s in them.

Slinger
dell's motherboards...all i meant by mobo..but like AJ said, the price for 32 or 64 gigs of ram is going to be nuts.
AJLynn
Holy crap, they actually do sell systems that can go to 64GB and claim 128GB if you can get 8GB FBDIMMs. They've got 16 RAM slots in there. I can't even find what button you'd need to configure that much RAM on the Dell web site - maybe it's a special order by phone thing - but Crucial's price is $630 per 2x4GB FBDIMMs so the price for 64GB would be $5040. That's 4X the cost of DDR2 memory for Core2 systems, but slightly less absurd than it used to be, so if you want to... ummm... let's see... Edit a feature-length film in 4k res? Yeah... Slinger
(2) 8gig sticks for $11,000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134650
AJLynn
So you have a choice - 128GB for the Dell, or a large render farm, or two salaries for a year, or a down payment on a house...
