autodesk subscription / 2009 rant

Plus, if you have an autodesk subscription you get both versions, but can only run version at a time.

Question to those on the subscription plan, did you only receive one version of 2009, or did you get both? We only got 2009 design. I'm not sure what I'll be missing out on as people start taking advantage of the SDK, but I know for sure that we didn't buy the subscription plan to get updates without all of the features.

On a seperate note, does anyone think that it's really stupid how the great new interoperability with revit is only one way. If 2009 Design is supposed to be catering to the design industry, did they not realize the gem they have in the file link manager and it's ability to update files? The whole FBX importer is cool, I don't care if they want to use their new format, but don't you think it would have been 100 times smarter to make it an active link tool not a one way importer.

two steps forward, one step back in my opinion.

The SDK has been around for a long time, I think if you haven't used it yet you're not likely to - it's for programmers. And making the Revit link 2-way... I shudder to think how many ways that would be broken. Let them get one of the ways right, first.

I believe on subscription, you are entitled to either Max 2009 design or Max 2009. But, ....as I understand it, you can only have one version installed on your computer at a time. I am guessing this can be overcome if you install Max 2009 on one machine, and Max 2009 design on another, and then simply rename the directories so they are different, and copy the version you don't have to your computer.

Hmm... I guess that makes me feel better. Although it just makes me wonder why even bother splitting the program, unless they didn't want their new "exposure control" technology opened up by the SDK

wow..... I'm only 14 pages into the 37, and all I can say is holy crap! (feel free to insert a more explicit adjective)

nice post Travis, I highly recommend it as a good lunch read, well.... good evening read. Starts with plenty of humor followed by professional rip apart of Autodesk, and Autodesk's Product line manager playing defendant.

oh well.... I guess it is what it is, at least we got a phenomenally new well designed icon out of the whole thing!

I did some looking into the genealogy of the new icon and came across an amazing tale. I guess a few years back the adobe JPG logo went out late one night, had a bit too much to drink and fathered an illegitimate icon with a beat up old version of MS word. Being the good parents they are and knowing they could never show this abomination to the light of day, they put it up for adoption, and low and behold years later Autodesk was nice enough to come by, adopt the little guy and bring us all the little bundle of joy that only a mother could love.....
