....soooo........it s been 2 weeks since 1/31.....

i m relatively new to onyxtree....

all my self tweaked trees look like octopus....and i started from the mahogany preset.......

i tried to follow the tutorials that come with the software....but i have no idea how some of the parameters r linked to a real tree......like winding steps....and curving structures......increasing curving steps, and curving angles dont do what i think it does....

i also watched the 3dats onyx vid tutorial......but it only covered palm tree in detail........i assumed that most of the parameters behave the same across diff onyx apps....but the end result is not desirable.......

and i m also wonder what others do to tweak the generated mesh to make it more realistic.....do u turbosmooth and paint/pull the mesh to the form u want?

and texturing tree branches is painful...i think i m doin it wrong....the texture map is right for the trunk but too short for the branches......and i have to manually uvm map the branches ...... i m sure theres a better way to do this....

so...again....i hope something do come really soon.....

from the license agreement:

"...you are NOT licensed to use the Software in connection with the sale, resale, license or other commercial reproduction or distribution of images and 3D models generated by the Software."

So it's against the license agreement to sell your models, even in the treestorm file format.

Not shooting the messenger here, and dead thread but ...

What a pile of garbage!

They are effectively selling you a hammer and then telling you after the fact that you are not allowed to sell anything you create using that hammer.

Or Autodesk saying you cannot 'sell' drawings to your client created using their AutoCAD package.

Or Ford saying you are not to use one of their cars as a taxi.

Totally insane and yet another example of why most people just ignore EULA's - they are full of conditions that would never stand up if applied to 'real' products, and in fact most EULAs would probably get shot down if they were ever testing in court (like Autodesk did when they tried to stop someone selling their old AutoCAD software)

Why do people buy Onyx? To make 3D models of trees to use in renders - which as I read it is breaking the EULA. But do they seriously think people are going to drop $500 on software for personal use? No .. they buy it to create works which they get paid for.

As far as I am concerned provided Onyx have been paid for the software the user owns that single copy and is perfectly entitled to sell their work created using that tool, or to resell that one copy should they stop using it.

um...just to be clear you ARE allowed to use models and images from an onyx program in your renders. you are NOT allowed to resell models and billboard renders of anything produced by onyx which is 100% fair enough.

Otherwise one person would just resell a heap of models and sell them for a fraction of the price of the onyx package and noone would end up buying onyx!

OK that makes more sense than just taking one paragraph from the EULA (which is what i was going off)

still - if someone puts their effort into developing a nice looking, realistic tree library using Onyx (or any software) then they should be able to sell it. Not everyone wants to buy and learn a new software just to obtain some decent 3D trees - they just want to buy a 3DS or whatever and drop them in. I would not regard these people as a lost sale, they never would have bought Onyx in the first place.

Has anyone ever thought that the scarcity of good Onyx tree models is because no-one is allowed to sell them? Its nice for users to share their hard work for free, but I just can't help thinking we would be better off if those who would like to sell their work could do so.

Anyway .. way off-topic! Just different viewpoints :)

(BTW yes my office bought Onyx, but it rarely gets touched because of the reason I mentioned above.)
