Modo is a program I have been thinking about switching to for awhile now, as the program and the output it produces are both superb. Now Modo has object animation with the latest Modo 302, it's becoming more and more tempting.

Modo is a great alternative program for Arch-Viz. I switched 3 years ago and I have enjoyed watching it develope. The selections tools alone make this program a very efficient and powerfull one. It doesn't have a particles system nor CA tools right now but it is great for the everyday job. We might see some of those tools in the 401 release. Luxology has a very strong and helpful community. The developers are always answering questions and helping the users with any issues they encounter which is sweet. Also, make sure to check Luxology TV:

IMHO, it is by far the best training resource I have seen for any 3D application (C4D just lunched something similar). Right now, Luxology is offering a 30 day trial version of Modo for the Skuuma Furniture Design Competition. It comes with some extra goodies. There is no reason why anybody shouldn't give it a try ;)

Someone told me about Modo and I checked their gallery out. Simply incredible.

If I didn't have so much time and money invested with 3DS, I'd do it. If I was just starting out, I'd use Modo.

I think if you try to do work with a 'big' firm, you might be in trouble as you'd be the exception to their workflow. But if you plan to freelance and say bugger to the (current) mainstream, then go for it!

Modo can do some absolutely incredible things with it's render engine.

I personally own both, 3dsmax and Modo. I use Modo for stills and 3dsmax for animations; this is for all my freelance work. You are right about 3dsmax/vray being the standard for any full-time Arch-Viz position out there though. I work 8hrs a day using 3dsmax and vray. I am currently trying to have Modo incorporated into our workflow at the office :p

Ernesto, i've been following modo for a while now and am still 50/50 on whether to adopt it as a modelling tool. i can now model pretty much what i need directly in max (something which took a while to learn as i relied on import of cad models/drawings).

if i now start to use modo, i would have to learn its own set of workarounds for accurate modelling. i have tried the demo and have noted that the program crashes quite a bit as soon as i try to use the snaps/guides. even when it doesn't crash, these tools don't seem to work with any kind of consistency. this is a shame as i really love the modelling tools and the very direct modelling approach.

do you use snaps/guides? and do you know of any tuts that go through them in some detail?

do you model by eye/import cad/ have an 'accuracy' workflow that you'd like to share?

Yes I use snaps all the time and I haven't experienced any crashing issues. What were you doing exactly when that happens?

Here are a couple of videos from Luxology TV that might help you to get your feet wet with these particular tools.

I import CAD line work and then I use them as guides for my modeling in Modo just like I do with 3dsmax. Modo, like 3dsmax, Maya, C4D, is not a CAD program so do not expect to have the same level of "accuracy". Lets just say that Modo is accurate enough for Arch Viz work. You will be surprise about how accurate it is even when you are eye balling things. You just need to be open minded and put the CAD " hard hat" to the side ;)

Here is a thread that Neil Hayes started in which he explains one of the methods there are to bring CAD data into Modo sucessfully. I use the same approach.

The AccuTrans license is only $20

Also, here are a couple of time lapsed video clips I put together showing more or less my work flow with Modo. I have been thinking about making a series of Arch Viz tutorials for Modo.

I hope it helps.

thanks for the reply and the great links Ernesto

i was trying to use the guides to snap to. i put them in the correct position, turn on snapping, and start creating but then it crashes. i must admit i only tried once because it took me a while to figure out how to use the guides and so when it crashed i just switched it off

I import CAD line work and then I use them as guides for my modeling in Modo just like I do with 3dsmax

this way works BUT i'm trying to avoid using cad as this means i have to do a lot of the work twice - once for the cad plans and then again to trace. i now like to model from scratch in max as this makes it much easier to make subsequent changes

sorry, 'accuracy' is the wrong word to use (i agree that these apps are accurate enough). what i find difficult in modo (and what i have finally grasped in max) is how to move/align/rotate/scale/position objects and subobjects 'accurately' in relation to other objects. your links go some way towards showing how this is possible and the modo website has some others so i'm gonna have another look at modo over the next couple of weeks

Also, here are a couple of time lapsed video clips I put together

thanks for taking the time to do these

I'm a new modo user, I really want to know how to let modo import and export the right camera infomation with 3Dmax, I was try FBX . but the camera was changed. I don't know why.

I hope I can setup camera in MAX or Modo, and can get same view in other. so that will be cool.

I haven't tried exporting from Max to Modo with the new FBX file format. I know you can't do that with previous 3dsmax versions. However, if you are looking for a camera match/tracker solution for Modo then make sure to check these guys out:

Quote from ssonic :
A full SynthEyes/Modo exporter is now available, see

http://www.ssontech.com

Handles various scene types, exports camera/object path, tracker locations, meshes, lights to modo.
