wacky715
hello! i am looking forward to buy a new laptop. I'm going to use it mainly for cad, 3d viz and vray rendering. my budget is around $1200 - 1900 I don't know if the vray rendering would be faster if i get a higher video card or maybe its better to get a higher processor. Thanks
shaneis
Your budget doesn't really allow for much. Typically you'd be paying double that for a half-decent portable workstation. If it doesn't need to be a laptop, you'd do much better to invest in a desktop (check the forum for previous posts on good configurations). If you must have a laptop, get the one with the fastest processor and the most RAM that you can find. If you can find one with a separate graphics card, all the better. No, V-Ray does not depend on the graphics card for rendering, just CPU and RAM.
AJLynn
This "portable workstation" stuff is overblown. Get a fast Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB or preferably 4 of RAM, a real (preferably GeForce unless you run Revit in which case you want Radeon) video without (and this is important) without "Shared Memory", "HyperMemory" or "TurboCache" - because those are euphemisms for "slow". Windows XP if you can get it. The rest is icing.

visualasylum
If you read this message, Get an ALIENWARE Area51 Laptop. Its a monster of Laptop. I have one, 2 years old, and Its still kicks ass. the new ones are even better. http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/area-51_m15x/area-51m_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT Believe me, with your budget of $1900, you could get one, and you won't regret. Just to let you know, Dell bought the whole company 2 years ago, and decided to keep the whole company with its own image. Let me know how it goes.
