How to effectively use Levels in MS

Ok, so I'm trying to learn MS as my modeling program (I render with 3ds/vray). But what bugs me most is how the "layers" or levels in MS work. Is there any way to possibly set up levels that are set in sub-levels by floor? I've tried filters, but I can't figure out how it works, or even if that's the right way to do it. It would be very helpful if anyone knows how to do this. I'm working with an 8 story building now, and being able to categorize levels by floor would be very helpful. Thanks!
