fadi3d
hello guys i was wondering if there is a big difference between a 2.66 quad and the xeon version of it (cause xeons r much more pricy) can we put two regular quads in a pc or some specific hardware is needed ? and would 4gb of 1066 Ram give me less power than 4gb of DDR3 1333 Ram ? Thank u in advance
Slinger
The cpu's are identical but the Xeons are just packaged as server cpu's. You can actually put a Xeon 3xxx series in any socket775 mobo. Now, you will not be able to buy a dual socket mobo and put Q6600s. They are not made to run on multi-cpu boards. If you want a multi-cpu set-up, you have to use the Xeon chips. As for the ram, are you talking DDR3 1066? IF so, it's honestly a waste of money for such low speeds and the cost is not worth it right now. I would hold off a while before I went to DDR3. fadi3d
slinger thxs for ur answer but what i meant is that two xeons of Say 2.66 are they like two regular 2.66 quads or much faster like in rendering with Vray .do u recommend using two xeons ? as for the ram do you recommend waiting and then going for DDR3 1333 instead of DDR3 1066 ? thank u in advance
AJLynn
The cores are basically the same. With Xeon chips on dual-socket motherboards, you can put two of them in the same system, but with a Core 2 Quad you can only have one. Double the number of CPU cores, double the speed, on processes that multithread efficiently like most render engines do. The tradeoff is more expensive parts - Xeons cost more than Core2s, the motherboards cost more and they use FBDIMMs which cost more than desktop memory.
