Locate the Origin

Hi Eveyone

I have constructed a floorplan of a house, and prepared the drawing for export (cleaned up the drawing) into 3D Max.

My quiery is that the drawing i have prepared for modelling in max needs to be centered on the origin in Autocad, As I am new to Autocad I'm not sure what that means. How would I center the drawing i've done as I have drawn the floorplan without taking this into consideration dose anyone have any advice/tutorials on how to do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)

select all the entities you drawn in max..... right click in select and move button..... in the move transform type in menu.... in absolute world... change alll values to zero.... now export the mesh as dwg.... it will the same origin in autocad....

Hi Sam

Not quite sure I have explained myself correctly, what I should have said in my initial quiery is that I want to import my Autocad drawing into 3D max, but I wanted to center the drawing on the Autocad origin before i brought it into 3d max.

This would make it easy for me to import cad layers (i.e. building walls, doors, windows) into 3d max one at a time where I can position each layer correctly on the 3d max origin and make it more simple to model.

I hope this makes more sense

he's got the right idea, just the wrong application.

in autocad, use the 'move' command (M) and when asked to select objects, type 'all' (make sure all layers are on and not frozen/locked)

hit 'enter' and when asked for a base point, select a point in the center of your model (or where ever you want the origin to be).

once you have that, then type in 0,0,0 to move it - this is the origin point in autocad where the intersection of the X/Y/Z axis meet.

hope that makes sense.....

your advice worked a treat, this may sound silly but now I have imported my drawing into max how do I move the drawing to the max origin? :o

the origin point in max should be the same as autocad when you import / link it.

whatever is your 0,0,0 (origin) in autocad should show up at the max origin....doesn't it ?
