Two Easy Questions

at least I hope they are.

I have just started using Max 9 and two things I have run into that are causing me grief.

1. How do you create a single-side plane? This used to be the default for planes created in Max8 but now all the planes have two faces (front & Back). I tried converting to an editable poly and erasing one but that erased the whole plane. Reason I need this is I use Maxwell render and need emitter planes that throw light only in one direction.

2. Is anyone else having issues with Alt-W. I find very often that if I have an object selected in full screen perspective, Alt-W will not restore my default 4-window views. I'm sure I don't need to get into detail on just how annoying that is.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks,

Sean

1) Planes are still just one-sided. If you only want to see the one side, just turn off (or is it on? I get those confused... just make it the opposite of whatever it is) backface culling in the object properties dialogue.

2) Yes, I have the same occasional issues with Alt-W.

awesome, thanks Rob -- I new it was something minor I was just missing. Too bad about the Alt-W, that is really annoying.

Are you from Nutley originally? I know a lot of guys from there about the same age as you, met most of them at Rutgers. I'm from Bogota originally and working in Secaucus now.

To fix the Alt-W, go into Customize UI, change the group from 'MainUI' to 'Edit/Editable Mesh' and either remove the Alt-W hotkey assignment to 'weld target mode' or turnoff the Editable Mesh hotkeys completely by unchecking the 'active' box.

Alternatively, you could use Edit Poly instead.

There's also the keyboard shortcut override toggle which will work too

thanks for the tips regarding Alt-W. This is the first project I modelled in ACAD which imports as meshes, I normally do all polygon modelling in Max so I never really ran into the problem before. It was driving me nuts but I'm glad to know the fix. Thanks
