A/CAD-Max9 link file prob

:(Hi all,

First post, so here's hoping.

I have modelled four buildings in AutoCAD207 in Solids and have used the File Link Manager in Max 9 to import them into Max. My problem starts when I try to rotate the buildings that I have in the scene. Objects hare off at different pivot points rather than remaining in their relative position on the building; so window frames and glazing are all over the shop. It looks like a UCS thing. Normally, I would group them to keep them all together but that facility is not available.

Any ideas? I have two days to produce 3 high resolution images using V-Ray but the problem is stopping me from actually getting anywhere here.

Cheers guys n gals

prodham. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I know! I had the same issue a number of years ago, although not using File Link Manager, and I can't remember how I resolved the problem. Let's hope someone out there has a better memory than we do, hey!

Thanks again.

all i can think of (or remember) is to try importing into the same file as opposed to file linking, just to see if the same results occur.

i would have thought that file-linking would be more stable / predictable, but this might help towards a solution.

can't follow up for a few hours, sorry....off riding.

Paul,

You're a star for thinking about this. Cheers.

I have tried importing but same anomaly occurs. I have sort of cheated in that I have orientated the four buildings relative to their site positioning whilst still in AutoCAD, saved the file with the UCS set to World and then used the File Link Manager to import them. I can move them without the components of each building going their different ways, but if I need to rotate them at any time I'll be in trouble.

Really do need to find an answer to this one though.

Enjoy the ride.

if you need To rotate Then do That in autocad prior To using The FLM

i used To make etc bldgs on a site and Then wblock out each bldg separate

Then FLM in separately with proper orientation and The bldgs are already located in real world coordinates

b4 FLM

just an idea

why are you rotating in The max scene?

The site plan supposedly is already set up

??

if rotating in max scene doesnt work Then dont do That

just a question

Hi Vizwhiz

Thanks for the suggestion.

Beat you to it.

I built the terrain in Sketchup for the Sandbox utility to produce the variances in datum and construcct the buildings in AutoCAD for the joy of working with Solids. Importing the SU terrain into Max, I then used FLM to import the buildings.

Working in an architectural practice, it's odds on that the beggars will change the design of the proposal before it's all over, so the link to the original models in AutoCAD is important. I can remember a similar kind of odd behaviour in a model some years ago in Max but can't for the life of me remember what the root cause was or what I did to get around the problem. I would usually just group all the components of the building in Max to force them to do my rotational bidding but in this instance the grouping facility was not available, presumably due to the open link to AutoCAD.

All is well as the buildings are orientated correctly before FLM'd into Max but I'd dearly like to know what the cause of the annoying behaviour is.

Again, thanks for taking the time to lend a helping suggestion or two. It's what makes this site so useful.

so, no real solution came up then ?

if you want to send me the acad drawing, i'd be happy to have a look and see if i can replicate the issue.

it is something i'd like to try and solve for future reference. as an instructor i use autocad / max and file linking, so if any students have issues like that, i'll know what to do.

just PM me if you like.
