Jeff Mottle
I know there are always going to be bitter people in this industry who don't agree with the way someone is doing something, but this Private message today REALLY rubs me the wrong way. I've removed the name, but this person has 1 post on the site and felt compelled to send me this about the 3D awards competition. My replies interjected. Well you ask not to be quesionned about the choice, but sorry there are the same artworks 2 times Yes because the images were different. I know exactly which one you were talking about. there are artworks from the same person 4-5 times, looks like a random choice honestly. Of course there is, there is no rule stating you can not submit more than one image per person and never has been. Trust me the decisions were hardly random and A LOT of time was spent reviewing the images. Did you see mine??? Because I am not really expecting to win or to reach the final but come on at least 100 images there are total crap! Then vote them as crap. We can only submit for voting the best of what is being submitted to the competition each year. Although I would argue there are some very good images this year. VERY GOOD. Next time take a little be more time to see what people submitted and what you approved! Really annoying. As I said above, A LOT of time was spent doing this competition and I resent the insinuation that the selection was done without due care. Until you've walked a mile in someone's shoes, I'd suggest you either submit work that is good enough to be selected or keep your opinions to yourself. I'd hazard a guess that I've put more time into into organizing and setting up the scoring for this competition than most people spend on two production images, probably 10 images if you factor in the AVC too, and yet this guy feels compelled to extol his "wisdom" upon me. My wife just last night asked why I was not spending more time with her and what "I" was getting out of doing all of this. My reply was "nothing". She was not impressed. I'm walking around like a zombie as I'm so sleep deprived, and then this idiot, sends me the message above. I know I should not let the opinion of one person get under my skin like this, and that he does likely not reflect the opinions of the masses, but people like this drive me nuts. I bet this guy would not last 4 days working the hours I do.

Trevor Tizard
I think I speak for the majority here when I say we're extremely grateful for all the amazing hard work you do on this site. You are well aware that you shouldn't let remarks from a solitary individual like this rub you the wrong way, but we all get got sometimes! Agreed, you've done an amazing job with this site it's the premiere Arch Viz site in the world all thanks to you. There's always going to be someone who has something to complain about and you can't make everyone happy. You should be extremely proud of what you've done for this community, we are all better illustrators because of you're work.
shaneis
Serendipity. "...My wife just last night asked...", "...and then this idiot..." Go and be with your Wife. The conference is over, the AVC is all but done. We can "hold the fort" for a while. Have a good break, S.
Ernest Burden III
This is the first time I've submitted work to one of these competitions. I don't know if any of it made the final cut but if not I respect the process of how that first cut is made. I have been a judge and I know firsthand how hard and time-consuming it can be. Entering is easy. Judging is hard. The hardest part of judging is cutting works you like. I want them all to win, but they can't. So I have to keep narrowing down the 'ups' by making tough choices. I hate it when a piece I think is good falls below the next level of elimination. The entries become 'yours', you root for your favorites and want to see them go all the way. So how do you do it, how do you judge art or grade art of students? You try to remove the intangibles and find a set of criteria that you can apply more-or-less fairly. Examples would be 'lighting', 'modeling' or 'impact'. Jeff Mottle has always set up criteria for judges to use when scoring these competitions, and that's precisely why its so much work. It is anything but arbitrary and requires time to consider each piece on a number of levels. Jeff--don't worry about it and listen to Julia. I've gotten the same questions from my wife and its important to listen to people who care about us.

Scott Erstad
I think I speak for the majority here when I say we're extremely grateful for all the amazing hard work you do on this site. I don't think I can expand on that singular thought, but I do believe in letting people know when they do fine work, and perhaps that time is long overdue. I know you are not soliciting this but you need to understand that even though we are all a globe apart that your work is valued & valuable to us all. We are all better for it. Thanks a TON for your efforts, it is greatly appreciated. Regards, Scott
aaron-cds
Ditto to everything that's been said. This is a great site and a great resource. The 3d awards and the AVC is a very nice part of the site but don't put it before family, imo.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Perhaps it is time to ask for board help on setting a few of these things up. You would want to keep control for the most part to keep the quality up, but maybe gather some volunteers that can help sort through images and prep them for you to go through, etc... Similar to the need for people to step up and help with the ASAI.

Similar to the need for people to step up and help with the ASAI. Next year I think I might ditch the AVC in favor of something similar to what is going on it our Dupe-A-Photo, which Joel has been so kind in setting up and administering. In other words, something no so formal. While the concept is there, the AVC is proving to simply be too hard for the vast majority of people to compete in. I'm all ears for suggestions for something new. What I would then do is turn the 3D awards into something much bigger. More categories, more complex voting (maybe even a gathering of judges somewhere), rather than just public vote. I'd also open the gates for entry much sooner and do the voting much earlier so there is time to get more people together. thoughts?

I'm in favor of more categories. Out of the 261 stills, to say that there are 5 or 6 that qualify for best image and runner up is unfair. There are a lot of images that could share the best image spot. It's an amazing collection of renderings.
Ernest Burden III
LOL, this isn't exactly fair - we can ID an Ernest image from a thumbnail with both eyes closed That doesn't mean you'll actually like it. After uploading an animation, I wondered if I should have removed the full-screen logo I added at the end. Maybe Jeff did if it made it to the finals. If not, I feel pretty stupid. Well, I feel stupid regardless.

Jeff Mottle
this guy sent some more disparaging comments via PM, so I decided to pull up the images that he submitted to the competition. One at best is a 5 or 6 out of 10, based on scores of existing images and the other I doubt would get more than a 3 out of 10. Oddly enough this image is the one he was so proud about. Amazing how some people are so oblivious to how bad their work is. I guess I should not be surprised. Look at the people who audition for American Idol... Well, I feel stupid regardless. There were quite a few animations with credits, and I did not remove them. as it was sometimes overlaid on the animation. I would not worry though. Besides as others have pointed out, your work is pretty identifiable anyway. In a good way too BTW.

Jeff Mottle
hmmm so jeff watches american idol???? (nodding head in dismay) Hahahaha, I have to amuse myself somehow during my 5pm to 2am workshift. I work from my office during the day for VisMasters, but usually work from my laptop on the couch when I do CGA work. Admittedly I stopped watching the season half way though as it sucked so much. brianzajac
I know there are always going to be bitter people in this industry who don't agree with the way someone is doing something I look at life like a bell curve. If you offer a great product/service, there will always be people who are extremely happy and extremely disappointed. But, the majority will always be in the middle of those. Of course there is, there is no rule stating you can not submit more than one image per person and never has been. Trust me the decisions were hardly random and A LOT of time was spent reviewing the images. As I said above, A LOT of time was spent doing this competition and I resent the insinuation that the selection was done without due care. Until you've walked a mile in someone's shoes, I'd suggest you either submit work that is good enough to be selected or keep your opinions to yourself. What's amazing is that you need to justify. The way your site is built and the connections you have justify the quality & hard work. But, as most, we need to vent to others who understand what is going on. What's nice is the community is backing you 100%. One of the things I try my best is to be mindful about the others whom I am mostly with. An overworked life and sleep deprivation are no ways to live without a great purpose. For me, a marriage will always trump a competition. This competition may give you credibility, but your quality of life and wife stay with you. I hope some of this information helps.
Bwana Kahawa
Just finished voting on the stills - there's some amazing work there. Jeff, just wanted to say thanks for doing it all. It says something that I'd planned to have this evening off work and just relax, and my activity of choice was to look through the 3D Awards images for an hour or two. If it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't be where I am today by any means. I'm the only arch-vis guy in my office so don't really have anyone to 'talk shop' with - the community here is great for both technical support and advice, and also a good friendly bunch to chat with on other matters too. Cheers for the AVC too - I'd hoped to be part of it ever since I came across it a few years ago and I've really enjoyed doing it this year, so thanks so much for organising it all. If by some fluke I make it to Mundos Digitales, I'll buy you a pint or two!! Now have a bit of a break and unload some of the responsibilities on to the willing volunteers here - you deserve to share the load a bit!
