nah, this wasn't just a network rendering service pack. Standalone is for rendering the MR scenes without the overhead associated with Max/Viz/Backburner - really efficient. When they updated 3.6.5 for 2009, they did not update the standalone so it broke many production pipelines. With this release, it's fixed. If you don't currently own a standalone license of MR, this doesn't really pertain.

For max users the biggest downfall for using standalone is the licencing, one licence per CPU. Ends up costing a forture for a renderfarm, compared to the "unlimited" render nodes with Max.

 

Although the ability to custom write your renderpipe line sounds interesting
