Antisthenes
possible to send models/scenes from other programs to it?
Scott Dombrowski
Just to clarify, I think the thread's title should be "mental ray standalone service pack now available", just to avoid confusion. The service pack is free, but the standalone version of mental ray is not.
AJLynn
possible to send models/scenes from other programs to it? No, you need software that has the interface to mental ray standalone. No Rhino compatibility.
Tommy Burns
Sorry for the ignorance but is this just a sp for network rendering or an sp for anyone that uses mentalray. I have max 2009 design at work and I use MR all the time (the standalone thing has thrown me) Thanks
John Dollus
nah, this wasn't just a network rendering service pack. Standalone is for rendering the MR scenes without the overhead associated with Max/Viz/Backburner - really efficient. When they updated 3.6.5 for 2009, they did not update the standalone so it broke many production pipelines. With this release, it's fixed. If you don't currently own a standalone license of MR, this doesn't really pertain.
Tommy Burns
That's great Thanks for the explanation!! Tommy
Justin Hunt
For max users the biggest downfall for using standalone is the licencing, one licence per CPU. Ends up costing a forture for a renderfarm, compared to the "unlimited" render nodes with Max. Although the ability to custom write your renderpipe line sounds interesting jhv
