Recommended Posts

helloo guys. my HD got fried a week ago so i installed 2 new ones in raid and windows vista ultimate.till now i've never hated a software this much. when i even try to move a jpeg or a file it keeps ask me if i want tocontinue ? and if i want to rename that pic or file it just asks me again and again so organising my pictures is taking for ever .and even if i say continue the whole screen "blinks" once for each continue it is hurting my eyes. so is there a work around for this or this is just the way of vista?

PS i am the sole user of my pc and the administrator.

and guys if there is no solution i will be switching back to XP sp2 64 so do any of u have issues with it and Max 2008 and Vray Sp1 And Ps Cs3? i was using Xp 32 any advice or help is much welcomed.

a lot of Vista so called security features can be turned off, and made to operate in a similar fashion to XP. i recommend this. also, make sure you keep checking for updates on the drivers and such. i run Vista on my home machine without to many problems, but i am in the camp that believes Vista is similar to Windows ME. which was only around for a short period before being replaced by XP.

I've run all that software on XP64 with no problems. Except Vray, but everybody else seems to run that without problems. Isn't there a newer SP of Vray? You might try that. The only thing on XP64 that gives me trouble is iTunes - I had to find a guide to tricking the Vista64 installer into running on XP64, and still it bitches and moans about not being able to burn CDs and I don't let it run software update.

And personally, I would never do a raid set-up for a OS....when something goes wrong, guess what, you get to reformat everything.

The everyday user really has no business with a raid set-up...sorry, but it is true.

My home desktop has the OS on one drive, and a RAID 1 configuration on the other 2 drives.

I think this is very useful for the home user that does not have an IT department backing up files on a nightly or weekly basis. I only started this when I was on my fifth or so hard drive, and had lost lots of data.

Thanks everybody

Crazy homeless guy could u pls elaborate on what specific security i must change?

Slinger do you mean that raid config (as mirror ) is useless cause i was hoping if one Hd failed i would'nt have to reinstall everything (and every single plugin) if so i think it would be also useless if i used it for my library?

thanks you for your time guys i wish i had more knowledge of Os.

No, RAID as striping your OS. I have had friends do this and boy was it a mistake. Mirroring is fine.

I however don't use raid and I have 3 hdd's- a main drive, a music/games/movies/etc drive, and a professional work drive. I also copy my work files to the game/music/fun drive for back-up.

BTW, the use of raid for performance is not a huge ordeal for your everyday user. You honestly will not see huge difference in a raid vs not raid with good hdd's ie. 7200rpm with 16mb cache or more.

I don't think you get to much of a performance boost to make it worth the extra expense...

My Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard has a RAID controller built in, so no extra expense there really.

If I have to write a 100-meg file, I can write it twice as fast if I have two controllers writing it, rather than just one.

As long as I use my external hd with USB2, I feel that my data is safe and fast.

When it comes down to it, it's what ever you feel comfortable with.

sorry to disrupt but i have a Vista nightmare of my own. not my pC but i am helping a friend purge vista from a new laptop and i cant see to find XP drivers for the sound or wireless card

do you think hardware like this will ever work with XP?

There are a lot of sound and wireless cards that work on XP...

What you'd need to do is either find the drivers on the web site of the laptop manufacturer (some companies provide them) or look up exactly what the sound and wireless adapters are and find the drivers yourself. You'll probably be able to do it - the set of hardware available that has Vista but not XP drivers is pretty small.
