memory question

if overall polygons/faces is a big determination of memory usage during rendering, how do instanced proxies contribute to this?

if it has to use memory to load/calculate indirect illumination/render all of the geometry...

am i confusing two different things?

V-Ray only loads the geometry it needs from proxy files at rendertime. And then, it is subject to the dynamic memory limit. It reads from disk a lot. This is why its much slower than static geometry when rendering.

This is different from static geometry which is completely loaded into memory. Will use as much system memory as required.

Other things like irradiance maps, aa, frame buffers etc, contribute to memory too.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

ah i think i was relating dynamic memory to virtual memory for some reason. my scene was crashing, so i was turning dynamic memory up, but i guess i should be turning it down.

so if i turn down dynamic memory, it will use less RAM, but the scene will render slower?
