pwharton
Is there a reason that I cannot get thumbnail views of my Max files in explorer? I can get thumbnails of everything else but for some reason I cannot get the max files to show up. I have looked but I cannot find anything that can change the status of the images I am getting. Does anybody have a clue why this is happening?
AFK_Matrix
Only a guess here but its probably becuase windows can't understand the file type? I too seem to get that as well but its only a guess why its happening.
Crazy Homeless Guy
the thumbnails you are getting are of jpegs, and other file types that windows knows how to understand. a max file is not going to natively display a preview icon because that is not the way windows icons are setup to work. there may be a 3rd party tool that allows displaying of icons, but i don't know of any. alternately, you can use the 'asset browser' built into Max to preview icons of Max files. Tommy L
I get a preview of the file's viewport.
Antisthenes
i have little programs/registry keys that show me Icons of what the images look like but some take a little registry edits for PSD and AI files DWG files and 3DM files what i would like is a translator for MAx files that does not require max installed as well as to see these thumbnails as well what version are you having installed to get those Tommy L? Crazy Homeless Guy
Are we talking about view port thumbnails when you open your Max file, or thumbnails displayed in Windows File Explorer?
johnvid
Max Project files Last saved Viewport, used to show up as the icon, with older Max versionsdont know what happened to them they dont show anymore
Crazy Homeless Guy
I think the topic changed in this thread. The initial post clearly shows File Explorer, and asks why the thumbnails do not show up there. As for showing up in the file open dialog, ...do you have this checked in your preferences? Maybe there was a bug here, but I don't remember not having a preview when opening files in any of the versions.

pwharton
Yes litleboy, That is what I am use to seeing in Explorer on my old machine [This new machine has been a nightmare for me (see some of my other post on this forum) but you guys have helped me clear up most of my issues, I am hoping you can help me with this one. I am fine with opening files in Max and seeing a preview. It’s just faster to locate a particular file in explorer then going through them in max
