djohnson129
Hey its me again First, I just want to show you guys (or those who helped me a few weeks ago) how much I've progressed with vray. Attached are two renders- one from a few weeks ago, the other a couple nights ago. As you can see, I've made some good progress in learning vray. I still need to finish modelling my scene, but I'm too excited about vray to do that right now so I've just been playing with the render settings. My question/problem (if you couldnt tell from the 'good' render) is the black outline in the window area; it looks like its only affected these little rods that are part of the window frame. Anyways, I did some testing and concluded its due to the AntiAliasing Filter I'm using. Pretty much all of the filters that include "edge enhancement" cause that outline, while ones like Blend and Cook Variable that offer blurring dont have the problem. Well I'd be fine using those, but I dont like how the small edge details are lost when I use them. Soooo my question is- Is this a normal problem for people to have? Do interior renders lit by outside lighting look/work better when using a particular filter? If so, which one(s)? I actually just thought about the material I have for those rods- its a metal one. I'm wondering now if that has anything to do with it. I'll go check on that. In the mean time, thank you again for those who can offer advice and help -David
djohnson129
Ok so I just confirmed that the material on the rods has no effect on that problem. Its gotta be from the AntiAliasing Filter.
Fransiskus Febrianto
What image sampler you use? It seems like you use adaptive subdivision with the default setting ( min=-1, max=2). Try to increase the max to 3... or you can always use adaptive dmc. You can always render without any aa filter and use sharpening filter from any image editing program, since I believe this is only for still image. djohnson129
I am using the Adaptive QMC at 1/3. I've tried with Adaptive Subdivision 1/4 and got the same results. I actually found another website that talked about the filters and its pretty much said that the edge enhancing filters cause weird problems (i'm assuming like my problem) while the other ones that involve softening and blur dont. ...kinda just reinforced my theory that the filters were the problem. Right now I'm doing some renders using the Cubic filter and I guess it'll do for now. I actually ran into another problem once I unhide my window pane. When the window is hidden, the shadows of the window frame appear nicely on the couch, but when I unhide the window, they dissappear. I think the problem is actually that the direct sunlight from my VraySun dissappears or doesnt go through my window for some reason. Does anybody know why? Attached is my latest render. You can see that the window frame outline problem is fixed, but you can see that the direct sunlight patch is no longer there.
djohnson129
Here's a render of everything the same but with the window hidden.
whitetr
is your glass material on an MSO?
djohnson129
yes
whitetr
make the glass material a stand alone material (non-MSO) or use the VRayBlend in the MSO. Or, just hide the glass:)
djohnson129
making it stand alone didnt work I'd like to keep the glass cuz it makes the window frame look better, plus I dont want to just ignore this problem cuz I'm sure it'll happen again in a different project
whitetr
silly question, but do you have "effect shadows" checked in the refract section of the mat?
djohnson129
So it turns out there's a little check box in the vray material for the glass that says "affect shadows".....I checked it and that solved my problem

Nic H
check subpixel mapping and clamp output, it will get rid of those jagged tings.
djohnson129
here's a render of the window and shadows working. I think I've done enough practice with vray now so I'm gonna go finish modelling and texturing the room. I'll try checking those boxes nicnic and let you know if it works for me
djohnson129
Hey that helped! gracias Here's a render- its a heck of a lot sharper than the one with the cubic filter
