Lightboxcs
Hi Could someone please advise on which render engine to use for a walkthrough with doors opening? I understand the settings if its just the camera moving but there are doors opening so I realise that a primary Irradiance map and secondary lightcache are probably not the best engines to use. Would Brute force be better (although it takes longer) E.g. Primary: Irradiance Map Secondary: Brute Force Thanks
jtaddei
you're going to hear lots of responses and mine may not reflect a majority opinion but it is what i use. I render two different scenes, the interior with the interior settings on, and the exterior with the exterior settings on. I seperate the animations so that the frames merge together (maybe even overlap... example: render frame 1-200 interior and 180-500 exterior). Then in a post production application like after effects i'll simulate a flash of light (similar to what would happen when you open the doors from a dark interior to bright day) then slowly fade in the exterior scene. It can take some tweaking to get the merge correct but it's much easier to pull off. At least to me.
litleboy
jtaddei, I like your method.. al video cameras adapt to the new illumination with a fade in/out like change. Edited June 17, 2008 by litleboy spell
Nic H
id do a seperate pass for the door. you can use lightcache still, just make sure its set to world and use the 'high animation preset' to set it up select all objects except for the moving doors and make them > vray object properties -1, affect alpha and shadows ticked. click render and it should render just the door with a shadow in the alpha channel. render the sequence using single frame irr map and composite in after effects, combustion etc. using screen modeto knock out the black (*i think* cant remeber?) this method is quick to render, and will give flicker free results and flexibility to change and keep your other GI precalculated. BrianKitts
I don't think he was looing for interior versus exterior settings... but rather render settings for a scene with moving objects. Read up on the animation preset for your irradiance map. That's a better route then brute force.... edit: nicnic's method is another route, I've never tried that one before. Adding my 2 cents, personally I think the whole animating the doors swinging open in an animation is a bit cheesy. Even more so if it is the only thing in the scene that gets animated. It'd no more realistic than if the doors were just held open. The only way I could see it being done well is if there is a person there opening the door in the scene. But that's just my opinion. Nic H
no he asked for a way to do moving objects, the way i descibed will work well! animation prepass is a fiddly, slow and doesnt give the flexibility comping gives you, but there are many ways to skin a cat. landrvr1
IR/LC - without any cachefiles; straight from file everytime - with an IR preset of 'high-animation' always works great for me with no flickering. All the other methods tend to get cumbersome and time consuming. Success using this method is dependent on some other setup factors, but I'd give it a try. And Brian is right. Opening and closing doors has been done to death and is soooo yesterday, lol.

Lightboxcs
Thank you all very much for your responses. I agree with the pure cheese and I am pleased to say that I have convinced the client to have the doors open. Cheers
