kippu
the 24 materials is not a limitation on your scene ..you can only view 24 materials at a time ...other than that you can use how many number of materials you need ...

dean@pikcells
the big search button at the top of this page will probably give you hundreds of topics with the same question and answers. failing that, theres always the max help files (F1 by the way)
whitetr
Hi, When I work with materials, I only use the 2X3 grid...it's my bad eyesight:) Anyway, when I'm finished with any particular material, I'll drag a "blank" material from an unused slot over a material I'm done with. It doesn't affect the scene, just the material editor. Also, I'll use the "Utilities->Reset Material Editor Slots" to get a clean editor. If you need to recall any materials from the scene, you can use the eye dropper tool and select striaght from the viewport or use the "get material" dialogue and click "scene" in the browse from section.
