metro_dust
In starting out a new 3D architectural Viz buisness we have ran into some issues involving pricing. Im opening this thread to get some opinions on what is a fair price to charge, how to charge (per hour, per piece, size of development...etc.) on a project by project basis. I know that there is a broad range of skill levels in companies therefore pricing of our services are all over the board. We are starting out small with 4 professionals, just north of the Detroit, Michigan border in Canada. Any help on what is fair and competitive is greatly appreciated in advance. Cheerio
Cesar R
I usually chager per project but I calculate based on how many hours inlcuding rendertime it is going to take me. In addition I add a small percentage for equipment and elec. The first few times I had a hard time quoting but once you get better at calculatin your time your chances of profit will increase. In addion I usually leave my self some extra time for then "oh s--T moments" and/or whatever may go wrong. Ie. add 10 hours for instance just in case something happens. I hope this helps. anyone else wants to chip in?
metro_dust
What is a fair hourly rate to start charging clients. We are thinking anywhere from 75-90 dollars an hour to start. To tell u the truth we've only looked around at graphic design pricing and this is what we came up with. If you could let me know if this is a reasonable rate and what other companies are charging it would go to great lengths. This is Canadian pricing as well so something like 2 dollars American........LOL, J/K. Sure seems like it these days though. Anyways thanks for any help you's can give me. ferox
that's a scary business plan..... In starting out a new 3D architectural Viz buisness we have ran into some issues involving pricing....To tell u the truth we've only looked around at graphic design pricing and this is what we came up with.your asset is not entirely a subjective survey of competitor's prices. the value of a visual asset is partly dependent on the value of the decision-making project it contributes to. it is the value your service contributes to the decision-making process (and that is a wide door for opportunity...) at what level of the decision-making market have you pitched? where does your service sit within those projects? on that basis, the more valuable your digital assets are to the project and the decision-making process, the more value can be demanded for your services. notwithstanding client bargain-hunting behaviour. or you can sell just pictures... Sawyer
Figure out what you need to make and what kind of work you are currently bringin in and do the math. Example: Bills: $2,000 per month (inludes rent and paying employes everything else you need to get by) Currently have 3 clients per month. Each project averages $800. Under this model I would need to raise my rates to survive or get more work. If each project takes 10 days I am screwed. Overly simple but you get the idea. I have really found that doing the math and figuring this stuff out is the only way to go. It is the only way to make your company work. If you go off the "well those guys over there say they charge $100 per hour so I will charge $90 and be competitive" model you will just be setting yourself up. There are so many factors (and David Wright really did the work for you as to mapping some of the big stuff) that if you used my model of how I charge for my work you would be doing a diservice to your company. I could have a p2 and live with my mom. You might have more luck if you find out how much you need to make per month divide that by hours you can work an then ask us if that rate is a good ballpark rate. Also you should have a good feel if 75-90 is a rate people will pay. If that is not a price you have charged before try it and see how much work you get. Pavel Roder
Greetings! This is very relative. It depends on what is costumer willing to pay. F.E. I get about $15 an hour (I mostly work for germans, czechs...) and my living expenses are about $250 a month. (this includes flat in center of Brno, cable, food, pub almost every evening... Nowadays when internet is around, it really doesnt matter where you are to fit your needs and wher(if you get 100$ an hour and pay 2000 bucks a month to survive - move elsewhere BigMac costs everywhere the same [ May 18, 2003, 09:12 AM: Message edited by: Pavel Roder ]
