Iain Denby
Can anyone help? I've just got a new system with 4 GB Ram. In Photoshop's preferences, it tells me that I have 1.7gb of available Ram. Is there a mximum of 2GB that Photoshop can use? System Dual 3GB Xeon 4GB Ram Windows XP Pro
quizzy
Yep, I think there is, because before we had NTFS partitions, the maximum file size was 2 GB. So there you go. I also think that the MAC only supports 2GB max file sizes.. Maybe Greg can give you some advice on how exactly this works...
garethace
Simply fact is guys, windows operating system itself cannot address any more than 2GB of memory - so the extra 2GB was really a complete waste. If you upgrade to the server edition of windows at a big cost, you will qualify for the ability to use 3GB, but never 4GB. If you wish to use 4GB+, then start researching up on the new 64bit Opteron chip from AMD, which hopefully should be good with many cg products in future. www.aceshardware.com/forum is a good place to start, as they go AMD opteron bananas over there. The poster Groo/Charlie seems to know the most of the inside track about opteron there. Try realworldtech.com forums or theinquirer.net forums too. arstechnica or extremetech.com would also be possible options - ars has a big mac/cg following i think.
