stevel
Not being a techie (obviously!), your advice would be appreciated! Would there be a significant difference between dual 2.0 Xeons and the same at 2.50? Thanks!
AJLynn
25%.
stevel
That's significant. I'm trying to watch the budget--the Dell I'm looking at comes with one Xeon 2.0. Would dual 2.0's be a reliable system (I'll be doing projects like large houses, condos, banks, smaller shopping centers, etc.)?
AJLynn
Reliable? Yes. Price efficient? You'll have to do your own math.
Slinger
And that $2799.00 is bare-bones...wow, you may get 2 Xeon quads, but you only get 2gigs of ram, a crappy graphics card, 1 hdd, and no monitor for that. On top of that, your buying a Mac. The only good thing about that set up is the case---but Apple messes that up by plastering that big ass apple on the side. BTW, you can configure a Dell workstation with almost exactly the same specs as the mac for the same price, so I am not sure how you think it's a much better deal going with a Mac. AJLynn
How did you get that to happen? If I configure a Dell T5400 with dual-quad 2.83's, 2GB RAM, 320GB HD, it comes to $3800. Compare to $2800 for the Apple. That's "a lot less" by my calculations. And it's a Dell, not an Apple, you can't run MacOS without hacking. If I want the Apple to have a decent video card, it will be an 8800GTS for an extra $150. If I want the Dell to have a decent video card, the cheapest option is an FX1700 for an extra $400. So now if I want value I need to go 3rd party and I haven't even got a chance to use it yet. Oh, right, the Dell price includes the low end 19" monitor. Dell won't sell you the computer without the monitor. So what's with the Apple hating anyway? You jealous of my MBP?
Ky Lane
I swear by the dual zeon quad mac. Been using one about a year now, and its dreamy. get 4GB ram, get another 500gb drive, get a 8800GT... and you have my system, and can vouch its FAST and reliable. Have a XPS720 at home, gorgeous gaming machine, not so speedy on rendering (then again, Im used to 8 cores).
AJLynn
To be fair, they're pretty much equally expandable - the Mac has a nicer system for adding hard drives but the Dell can take almost anything the Mac can, and there are a bunch of aftermarket video cards the Dell can take that the Mac won't run in OSX without some hacking. One nice thing the Mac will do that the Dell won't is run Elgato products - they make HDTV tuners and the software to deal with them, and they allow most useful edits and file format conversions while ignoring the broadcast flag restrictions, which it turns out are voluntary though Microsoft would never tell you that. oluv
i am also interested in a mac-pro. but is it true that under bootcamp and windows xp32 only 2gb ram can be addressed, not the typical 3,25? i would go for xp64, but there doesn't to be any driver-support for that. i am still undecided. AJLynn
I've never heard that, but if that problem exists maybe Ky can address it? I've seen reports of people using XP64, basically they had to find all the drivers themselves instead of getting them neatly packaged from Apple. Also, the newer versions of Bootcamp have Vista 64 support. With that you could use all the RAM you want.

QuadrofX570 is fine...you don't need a 1700, plus it's really not worth the upgrade. I can configure it without a monitor...telephone call FTW. Slinger
Plus the expandability of the Mac is almost endless.roflmao....I almost spit coke on my monitor after reading that.
AJLynn
Look, you don't have to be jealous of my MBP anymore, it's a couple years old and it's only a Core Duo, so I'm sure whatever you're using can frag at a higher FPS. Anyway, here's why MacOSX is better than Windows: -Microsoft still has pre-1990s legacy bloat. -Microsoft uses whatever DRM the MPAA asks them to, even if it breaks your drivers. -Microsoft tried to kill OpenGL in Vista and a whole bunch of apps would have stopped functioning if nVidia and others hadn't pushed a fix through at the last minute. -A whole bunch of apps stopped funstioning anyway. -Microsoft thinks it's important to make 5 versions of Windows available to consumers, and Apple still gives you more software with a Mac than you get in Windows Ultimate. -Microsoft makes you walk through the first three circles of hell if you want to use 64-bit. -"Windows Genuine Advantage". -The BSOD. -What happened to my boss's Outlook archive folders last week when he tried to use a machine with Outlook 2007. OTOH: -OSX is a certified Unix platform. -iWork beats the crap out of Office and costs something like $80. -The free one month Final Cut Pro, Logic and Aperture classes I can take at the Apple Store here, and the $99/year personal tutoring service - seriously, who else is going to produce an expert in any software you ask for at $2/hour with one day notice? -Aluminum. -No /3GB switch. -64-bit, 32-bit - same installer. -iMovie. -Garage Band. -Tech support people who are American (and three blocks from my office). And if you spit coke on the monitor, customer service won't tell you to go to hell. Seriously, Dell? You want to go Dell vs. Apple? This isn't fair at all. It's absurd Premiere login. Heh. So you represent a medium or large business, and you get to talk to a guy on the phone. I don't, and several Apple employees know my first name. Dell employees won't tell me their real names and will mispronounce mine even though it's one syllable.
Slinger
Psst. I was born and raised in Round Rock. I know a lot and I mean alot of people who work at Dell. I have done product testing for them. I get nice information from a friend on insider stuff. I don't have to just talk to a rep. I have rep's call me to purchase things. Andrew, I guess you missed the whole point of comparing apples to oranges...rofl, it's ok.
AJLynn
Oh, okay, there you go - it's like me rooting for the Red Sox. Doesn't mean I'm right but you'll never convince me I'm not.

lyca
i run a Mac-Pro with xp64 and 8gb of ram and 3.5TB internal Harddisk. i can tell you there is no reason to not get a Mac even if you don't run osx, it's the best machine you can get for the price. But if money does'n matter, get a Boxx.
