of course theres no board which will support dual quad 6600, of course you can get a mobo for dual quad core xeons ...which will require ecc ram which will cost quite a bit..so its not really really worth it .. :)

Well now I'm just going to have to mock you, because as you said the question has been asked and answered. Not surprisingly, the Intel person was correct. And you can guess, I am sure, the reason you can find no information on dual socket MBs for Core 2 Quad chips.

It's because... ready for this?... can you guess what's coming?... There is no such thing as a dual Core 2 Quad system. Only CPUs that use the 771 socket, such as Xeons and some Extremes, can go dual; socket 775 CPUs, such as Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo and Pentium 4, can not.

so if I am planning for a dual processor i shall move on to xeon

but as i have found that although the processor cost being the same appx for xeon 5405 (2 GHZ) and Q6600 (2.4 GHZ) the complete Machine will be on higher side due to a server board and ECC ram when i move to xeon.

is thr some way out or should i go for dual xeons.

I have got this config then :

2 x Xeon 5405

intel 5000 VSA motherboard

4 GB DDR II ecc

500 GB sata HDD

55000 INR (42 INR = 1 USD)

all the further details and rest all the things i will post by a day more after collection some information for the final feedback.

thanks AJLYnn and Maria

Skulltrail and QX9770...and the QX9770 is a socket775 cpu btw! With that said, it is no way worth the price on those chips.

Are you sure? If I search Newegg for a Skulltrail board I find the Intel 5400XS which has this in the specs:

Supported CPU

CPU Socket Type Dual LGA 771

CPU Type Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme in LGA771 package, Intel Xeon in LGA771 package

If you go with dual processors its worth considering paying extra to get a motherboard based on the 5400 chipset (designed for the xeon 54xx series).

They can support faster ram (FB DDR2 800) and a faster FSB (1600). Not only will this provide you with better upgrade options in the future, with a speck of electrical tape and the faster memory, a E5405 should overclock from 2.00G at 1333fsb to 2.4G at 1600fsb. More power for less! You'll have to do you research first to make sure you get the right components, but its worth the effort.

My bad...it takes the QX9775 only...which is 771...damn numbers getting me confused.

I just can't see why soneone would spend $1200/piece on processors, $400 on a mobo, and $200 on FB-DIMM, when you could build probably 2-3 rendering machines with Q6600 and have better scalability then a skulltrail set-up.

Hi all again,

I have got this as a config now

intel 5000VSA MOBO

1 X E 5420 (2.5 ghz, 12mb L2 cache, 1333 FSB) (I will keep 1 slot empty for now and upgrade it)

4 GB Ecc fully bufferd ram (667 fsb)

500 GB sata Hdd

Nvidia geforce 6200 TurboCache (I have one as extra so temp using it)

(1) as per my budget I can either add one more E 5420 either or 8800 gt graphics card

what shall be a better option.

(2) even in MOBO 5000 VSA or 5000 XVN (XVN is costing a bit more around 6000 INR (appx 150 USD))

Am I going right on the config or I shall have some major changes Kindly guide.

What's the system for? The Turbocache card will suck hard core for modeling. If it's a rendering box, it's fine so long as you can disable the TurboCache (it easts system RAM).

this system will be majorly intending on renderings only.

I personally am in favour of adding a processor more rather than going for a graphics sard for now I will add a card later.

since I have this card at my plce is is eating up my free space since i thought if at all i can add it. (I know i m quiet week at the hardware part :()

surely i will disable turbocache and will replace the card soon.

is the other configuration fine (esp processor and MOBO) and which is a better motherboard.

Thanks AJLYNN
