jayadams
Gentlemen, long time listener, first time caller. I have the luxury of setting up a studio in an arch firm. I now have to come up with a comprehensive shopping list for software, hardware, furniture, books, periodicals, training, seminars, etc. I had a laundry list and was wondering if you guys could throw some ideas out that i may be forgetting. this is based on particular team members, industry std, dell deal at the office, ease of 3rd party content. 64 bit quad xeon 4g w/ quadro fx3700 (2) 20.1 widescreen (e207?) spyder2 monitor calibrator 3dsmax, vray, maxwell, sketchup, vray for sketchup evermotion/bionatics for trees axyz and evermotion for cars axyz for people What sort of other things would i need to get an studio within an arch firm going? Our responsibilites include elevating all buildings at the office, along with visualization and master planning. Any ideas would be great. Thanks. SandmanNinja
I'd get 8-gigs of ram. No point in having 64-bit if ya aint gonna use it. Edited July 10, 2008 by SandmanNinja typo

Bwana Kahawa
Don't know whether you'd already have any, but a decent library of both HDRIs for lighting and reflections, and a materials library for textures. Although we find we just tend to buy them as and when they're needed, I suppose. And a decent hi-fi system.
frank1331
How about a quality printer. And make sure its output is calibrated to your screen output.

jayadams
Do you guys know of a couple of good printers? (tabloid full bleed, quality? for in house and presentation output?) I will be using the same stock as our oversized outhouse printer.
Dave Buchhofer
No mention of a renderfarm? thats the single biggest thing here now that vray DR works even if you're planning to send most of the animated bits out of house to a farm, you'll need some inhouse to fire off dailys and tests to. I'm kind of meh about the Spyder, we've got one here and it literally calibrated everyones differently. calibrating LCD's is a major pain in the ass. as for enterage, bionatics is a bit of a pain, be sure to try it before you buy in. if you manage to pick yourself good initial seeds out of their library its good, otherwise it can get expensive fast. axyz is good, also look at lowpolygon3d, they're not as high quality as axyz individually, but you can never have too many people. CS3 suite? expensive, but complete or barring that, photoshop, afterfx, and dvd-lab wacom prefrences? personally we just have 1 huge one here that we pass around, and a couple smaller ones for the guys who got addicted to it. Cozimo.. check it out, may not be as needed for in-house work, but it certainly comes in handy for external clients.
Vince Paske
bionatics is a bit of a pain, be sure to try it before you buy in. i I used bionatics a a previous job, and found it difficult to get good results. I've been using Onyx trees ever since and really enjoy the tree/flower creating apps and find it easy to get good looking trees for renderings. And like Dave mentioned, a render farm is the most valuable tool in your stable. Also, consider placing your entourage library on a server that is backed up on a regular basis. jayadams
Thanks guys. Dave, what would a standard setup for renderfarm look like? Is there a better calibrator for my lcds? Thanks for the heads up on Bionatics. I can't believe i forgot the ol' wacom variable. Calvino, Thanks for the heads up with onyx. Ill check into it. These are awesome suggestions.
