wip - max 9, mental ray, onyx.

i think i can add some noise in the tile texture on the cement block to vary it a bit. i could also add a tiny bump map to give it a little more texture and vary the tile bump map to make some blocks bump out less than others.

the lights have a A&D translucent plastic template applied to them, but then i changed the diffuse color from pure white to a little more gray. but still for a "frosted" look, they stand out way too much. maybe more transparency?

i'm not sure what happened in the blacktop on the right, the distinct lines. i'll have to try and figure that out. the material is a A&D "pearl" preset with a speckle map in diffuse, bump and glossiness.

i cooled the color temp in post and added a vignette affect.

thanks

I think the exposure is good. What about contact shadows? or AO pass? The materials need some work. the pavement is tooooo shinny and clean. and so is the brick. you might want to refine composition if you are not showing the whole building. good start.

You're off to a good start with this.

Good modeling and exposure, the foliage is nice...

Composition could be better. There is too much empty foreground...try changing the aspect ratio of the frame and move the camera around.

The windows need some attention because they appear as black holes. Give them something to reflect.

Good work all in all.

i was thinking. couldn't i use vertex colors to darken specific areas of the black top to show where there might be darker patches due to rubber from car tires?

if this is true, i'm having a bear of a time finding how to do it. the max manual does a great job of explain which buttons do what, and they get into radiosity but for some reason i can't get simple vertex colors to show up.

i thought i saw a tutorial once where they made a wooden book shelf and added "detail" by using vertex colors (dark brown) on the verticies on the inside top of where each shelf was. the result was a darkened shade of wood that was like a gradient from up under a shelf.
