Material splotches....

Hi everyone,

I've a problem for the max+vray boffins out there... I've got a material that is consistently rendering out square/trapezoidal oddities in a marble floor tile material. It's not a co-planar face issue as secondary rays bias is on. Any thoughts anyone??

Is it a sampling issue? Not enough? Too much? Is it the irradiance map and light cache? Any help would be appreciated... - Thanks in advance.

Have you modeled that from imported cad splines? Looks like there might be duplicate faces on top of each other or maybe an extrude of 0 height. Also, if it is an extrude, check the spline you extruded, it might have multiple splines in the same shape (common problem when importing cad data that isn't neat).

I often get this effect when there is a displacement map altering the material. does this material have any displacement happening?

No displacement mapping... it turned out to be a coplanar face of a solid with transparency, conflicting with the face of a solid below.

subdivide your geometry either manually in edit poly to get rid of horrible long triangles, or use a subdivide modifier. that should fix it

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm curious though, do thin, long triangles affect the way vray calculates its irradiance map/light cache solution?
