wuhoo
Hi everyone, I've a problem for the max+vray boffins out there... I've got a material that is consistently rendering out square/trapezoidal oddities in a marble floor tile material. It's not a co-planar face issue as secondary rays bias is on. Any thoughts anyone?? Is it a sampling issue? Not enough? Too much? Is it the irradiance map and light cache? Any help would be appreciated... - Thanks in advance. WAcky
I often get this effect when there is a displacement map altering the material. does this material have any displacement happening?
Nic H
subdivide your geometry either manually in edit poly to get rid of horrible long triangles, or use a subdivide modifier. that should fix it
LukeC
Have you modeled that from imported cad splines? Looks like there might be duplicate faces on top of each other or maybe an extrude of 0 height. Also, if it is an extrude, check the spline you extruded, it might have multiple splines in the same shape (common problem when importing cad data that isn't neat). wuhoo
I often get this effect when there is a displacement map altering the material. does this material have any displacement happening? No displacement mapping... it turned out to be a coplanar face of a solid with transparency, conflicting with the face of a solid below.

I'm curious though, do thin, long triangles affect the way vray calculates its irradiance map/light cache solution?
LukeC
correct me if i'm wrong but it shouldn't affect the imap at all.
