TheAllusionisst
I just wanted to give a heads up that we will be officially launching MrMaterials (Free mental ray materials repository) on Monday. Hopefully we will not find some major flaw in the system this weekend. http://www.mrmaterials.com/ We have set up is a materials repository for programs using Mental Ray, basically Max, Maya, stand-alone and XSI, with the same structure set up for just texture files for do-it-yourself and cross polination between programs. We are not trying to set up a whole new community, there are plenty in existence and I have one already to maintain, I don't think the Internet needs another at this time. What we do plan is to have materials, tutorials, blogs, news and whatever makes sense for a great resource for the MR community without competing with the general communities already present, just a supplement to them. Jeff Patton ( http://jeffpatton.cgsociety.org/blog/ ) as well as some other heavy hitters are part of this endeavor and we have big plans for the future. Jeff Patton created Max 9 and Max 2008-9 MatLabs (balanced material scenes with a widget for testing and setting up materials) for hard surfaces, cloth surfaces and glass-n-liquid surfaces (set up for caustics and SSS) and others helped translate them into Maya 2008 and XSI 6.5. We will be officially launching Monday, but we have all the MatLabs (Material Scenes for testing and setting up materials) up and I will be uploading a ton of Textures and Max materials this weekend. I haven't had a chance to do XSI materials yet and I don't use Maya, but we will have a lot of Max materials and it would be great to see Maya content as well, so anybody who would like to contribute it would be greatly appreciated. If nothing else stop by in a couple weeks after we have it all going smoothly and hopefully have some decent content for all three programs. The complete Arroway Texture collection have been translated into Max materials using the sample textures, but with the full sized texture names. Under these conditions if you have the full sized Arroway Textures these materials will automatically use the full sized texture files if pathed in your preferences. If anyone was seriously willing to tackle this chore for Maya, I can provide the sample textures already renamed to match the full sized versions. Basically the samples are say 634x634 pixels in diffuse, bump and specular, etc. and the full sized Arroway Textures are much, much bigger. Of course we have an arrangement with Arroway Textures for this just like we have an arrangement with Dosch Design for the HDRI we use and distribute with the MatLab scenes, so this arrangement is for their use in conjunction with MrMaterials. A big thanks goes out to Arroway Textures and Dosch Design for their generosity. OK, enough long winded posting from me I now have the hectic chore of uploading and setting up all the content, it is going to be a long weekend, but I wanted to let people know we were finally launching. Hope to see you there.
Crazy Homeless Guy
A big thanks goes out to you. So this is a site where users can upload and download materials and use them royalty free?
TheAllusionisst
A big thanks goes out to you. So this is a site where users can upload and download materials and use them royalty free? Yes, the same principal as the Maxwell Materials or Vray Materials sites. Success depends on people participating/contributing as well as downloading. In the end it's basic form is just an infrastructure for people to share mr materials, the blogs and other information are just supporting material and additional resources
kippu
great .. hopefully this should kickstart me more towards MR

TheAllusionisst
Hey, glad to hear the positive feedback, it is appreciated. Of course success will depend on the CG Community and whether others contribute, but we hope it turns into a good resource. Thanks again!
vizwhiz
congratulations on a great looking website This is a definately a Go To Mr material resource i am changing careers To website designer/developer/e-commerce starting in just a couple of weeks, so when i get around To making an online searchable (php) cg arch texture database This will be at The Top of The List for all Things 4 MR Thanks for all of your efforts
TheAllusionisst
Probably a more lucrative career move, sorry to say! It could be fun though, I love working on setting up website's/forum's designs/themes I just hate the maintenance and upkeep, or actually making them work. The biggest thorn anymore seems to be cross browser compatibility. I wish you much success in your new endeavor and thanks for the positive comments. Ky Lane
Just as I make the move to MR, you guys launch this. I think its a sign Top work, and thanks for helping out the (ever-growing) MR community. Are you taking site suggestions here? Or?

I think its a sign Top work, and thanks for helping out the (ever-growing) MR community. Are you taking site suggestions here? Or? We will try to support the site at 3DA so that all the suggestions are at one location and I don't have to go from forum to forum to pull out my hair Allready getting some at: http://www.3dallusions.com/forums/mental-ray/2860-mr-materials-com.html A lot of stuff is getting adressed as we can but cross browser compatibility has proven to be a major pain. But feel free to make suggestions in the thread linked above or start threads as necessary in those forums for mental ray. If I seem unresponsive to your suggestions just realize we read them and I discuss stuff with a programmer, but running a community and a studio and now this, I can get a bit overwhelmed at times, even cranky I always appreciate others trying to help make my projects better, sometimes I need a good nights sleep to appreciate it. johnnlo
is there a way of downloading all of it as a .mat and inserting in in your materials library?
TheAllusionisst
You have to download each one and each one has a mat file, that is how they are distributed. You could save the material to another combined mat file the first time you open it and thus it would be in your lager mat file, but there is no way of automatically doing this as far as I am aware. I am speaking of Max, I don't know about Maya and in XSI it depends on how you store your presets.
Michael J. Brown
Fantastic site! Saved it to my favs and telling others about it. I'll be uploading whatever materials of my own that I think may be worthy.
