Dave Buckley
When using the Vray sun it automatically puts in a VRay sky environment map. My question is does this map then give me my environment lighting???? Or do i still need to turn on GI Skylight in the vray rollout??? From what i gather they are both doing the same thing, in other words i could use one or the other???
jophus14
By putting a Vray Sky in the environment slot of your dropdown, you are able to control both the Sky and the environment individually. You can tone down the VraySky and bump up the environment lighting in your dropdown menu or vise-versa.

Trevor Tizard
No, you don't need to use the GI Environment skylight.
Dave Buckley
thanks trevor, that was more along the lines of the answer i was looking for, am i right in thinking that i would need to use the environment override if i opted not to use a vray sky??? jophus14
I was talking about the Vray:Environment drop down (GI Environment Override).
Trevor Tizard
Absolutely. The vraysky was designed to be used with the vray sun and physical camera. They don't all have to be used together however. Personally I use them all together, or none.

Dave Buckley
i quite like using the physical cam regardless of the scene, as i like the exposure controls on it. but with regards to lighting, i guess it depends whichever solution does what i need it to do in the quickest time and renders the fastest but i do quite like the way the sun/sky changes colours etc when you move it around in 3d space is there a direct control for setting time/date/location in vray or has that not been introduced yet?? btw thanks for the help so far guys
Trevor Tizard
Sure, you can link the VRay Sun to a max daylight system to get that.
Dave Buckley
well i'l be damned, stupid me never really thought of that, i'd been bloody just dragging out a sun into the scene all the time, i really should start reading user guides and documentation but i'm to eager to get my hands on
Dave Buckley
just to clarify when using daylight system to put sun in location, i select vray sun BUT when it comes to selecting skylight i assume i turn off the daylight system skylight as my vray sky environment is doing that right?? You won't see the sky in your render if you remove it from the Rendering>Environment slot..........that's why it goes there by default.
Dave Buckley
so going back to the first question in the post then i guess i can't use either/or it has to be in that location if i want to see it, if i don't want to see it then i can use the GI Environment Skylight
Dave Buckley
i have another thread going about magic hour renders i reckon its quite difficult to achieve with the vray sun and sky, because what i am after is that time in the day when the sky is dark blue but their is still a setting sun glow on everything. as soon as turn my sun to about 6pm, the lighting is ok for my exposure physical cam settings but the sky is mega orange
