Emoticons can kill...

That's probably the dumbest thing I read in a long time, probably written by some 50+ luddite type of guy. Really.

I'm a strong emoticon advocate (note: I don't condone l33tsp34k in formal communication) because I've been around so many cases where light humor is misunderstood because someone either forgot to input a smiley, or because the recipient didn't understand smilies (this doesn't happen nowdays when emoticons are almost universally graphical, but back in the day when someone didn't understand colon-right-paren, it could create some... issues).

I agree with the article.

The article is reffering to thank you emails sent to people who interviewed you for a job. It says that it is a bad idea to use slang spellings like 'thanx,' or emoticons in your follow up with a potential employer.

As pointed out above, often there is a need for emoticons because things are misunderstood easily on forums and message boards. However if you need an emoticon to show that you are sincere in a follow up email with a company, then there is a potential problem with you communication skills in general, which could turn into a problem later.

How often do you include emoticons in contracts? ..or proposals for work?
