Brian Cassil
http://tron-2-trailer.blogspot.com/ Since the director has/had ties to the Arch Vis community I thought I would share this. It's a really crappy phone video of what was shown at comic-con recently, but even so, it got me excited! I'm not sure how long this will be viewable before disney tracks down all the online versions of this. I was surprised to see it had been announced and even more surprised to see Jeff Bridges is in the sequel.
Ernest Burden III
LightCycles in 3D--who could have seen that coming. Forget Jeff Bridges, I want to know if they got Syd Mead back for this. The original was a rendered wireframe, with gradients applied by hand--fake phong rendering. I guess now the design will use current CG to fake the simple look of the original. My kids borrowed Tron from the library, I caught a few minutes of it yesterday. "Do you believe in the users?"
Chad Warner
Hopefully if Jeff Bridges deemed it quality enough to return, maybe it won't be too bad.
Brian Cassil
I haven't heard if Syd Mead is on board with this or not. Steven Lisberger is now producing this one. It's been in the works for quite a while. Certainly they won't be going through the insane measures they went through on the original to create the effects. Just no need for that. For me all they need to do is give everything the same visual context, push it further but don't make it too polished. I would love to see some flicker in the animation. Also, they have some opportunities to do things with the story that weren't possible then. The collective conciousness of computers, networking, the internet, Microsoft, I-phones, virtual reality, the matrix, MMORPG's and Google Earth has come soooooo far since the original was made. You almost had to be an adolecent to even "get" TRON. For me, as a 9 year old it made perfect sense that computer programs lived inside a computer fighting each other. The adults I knew hated the movie. In 1982, the mass majority of the population had never even used a computer. It's unbelievable that this movie was made then and even more unbelievable that Disney financed it. I don't think the Disney execs have ever understood what a gem they had, because it didn't make 100 million dollars. I have confidence in the production to do a good job with the visuals. I even think this would be really cool, if done right, in 3D. Could break new ground there really if Disney decides they want to be daring again. With the advances in technology in the last 26 years (yikes am I getting old!), and the increase in the afformentioned public consciousness, the story could unfold in so many different directions it's mind boggling. Ernest Burden III
It's unbelievable that this movie was made then and even more unbelievable that Disney financed it. That's exactly what I was thinking yesterday while watching a bit of it with my kids. Users vs. a giant corporation, Master Control Program (well before MS Windows) at a time we were all (those of us with computers) doing command-line. I have confidence in the production to do a good job with the visuals. I even think this would be really cool, if done right, in 3D. That trailer does not give me confidence on a good job. I suspect it is nothing more than some production tests strung together, so in the end what we saw may only be eyewash. How will they get the people all little and sucked into the CPU? Brian Cassil
How will they get the people all little and sucked into the CPU? Remember, only one was every actually sucked into the computer literally. All the others were programs who represented their users. But nowdays I could imagine maybe 10 different ways just off the top of my head that virtual versions of us live inside computers. Hey, maybe there is a little dancing lightbulb somewhere in cyberspace preaching on the evils of red ferraris in renderings?
