Spline Normals problem when imported from Autocad

I pulled these splines from an autocad drawing, and now when I try to extrude them, they extrude only in the plane they were drawn. Do splines have normals? I tried rotating, but the extrusion direction stuck with it as one would assume.

quick fix is to draw a shape (Circle..) in the view you'd like them to extrude away from, attach the problem splines there, and delete the shape (Circle)

 

maybe easier way, but that always works
