AFK_Matrix
Hi, I have some black siding/cladding on my house and when rendered the horizontal lines between planks isn't showing too well. I know its not gonna be easy as the material is black but what can I do to improve either the GI/Vray settings or the material to get the plank lines showing? This is a Vray material with a black diffuse slot and 0.6 of reflection.
Chad Warner
easiest one would be to put a gradient ramp map in the diffuse slot, and then play with the values of the gradient to get the effect you are after. Even though the material may be black, there will still be a little grey and white in there from the light source. If that doesn't work, how about a displacement map to simulate the siding lines? AFK_Matrix
Thanks Chad. Well this is a model I am actually converting over to Vray as I used to use Lightracer to render but now having been on Brian Smiths training course want to get some images with the Vray engine. So in actual fact the boarding is actually modelled with individual planks so was hoping they would do the job, otherwise I will replace with a flat model and use the gradient/displacement method. Chad Warner
If the planks are modeled, and you have the reflection set to .6, what color is the reflection map? you might then want to unlock the ref. glossiness and highlight glossiness and set the highlight glossiness to a .6 or .7. Nic H
Without a screenshot its hard to say but you could try the following: - higher GI / IMAP settings, start with medium or even try high presets. - higher AA with no filter or sharp quadratic, try QMC 2/5 and go up from there. - your reflection value could be just removing the definition especially with glossy values as low as .6. If you arent using a falloff map in reflect id try that as well. Dont bother the displacment route if you allready have it modelled imo. Whats your lighting set up? AFK_Matrix
Thanks for the tips guys. I am just doing very low res renders of a few houses that are going into a row of houses, just so i can get the materials right etc. I will up the GI/IMAP settings for the final render, just really wanted to check my material setting is all. Oh one more thing. I am doing external shots of these buildings but obviously I can see in the windows but I am seeing the brick on the inside of the building which is not what I want. I want a nice cream/white colour as though your seeing the walls. I tried the Vray 2 sided material but couldn't get it looking right on my walls, it just seemed to blend the brick colour with the pale cream colour . I have joined all my walls together into one object though. So how do you get a brick wall on one side and a nice cream wall on the other?
Nic H
2 Sided material is actually for simulating translucency with single poly objects, a bit misleading namewise. Id just select the polys inside on the inside of your wall object and apply a white material so you have a multisub material or detach them to a seperate object.
