fadi3d
Hello guys i set up my 3dmax so that textures i import are imported as being allready gamma corrected (almost all of them are evermotion or total textures)and everything is fine except when i pick a color from the net it turnes out much lighter than i expect so what am i supposed to do ? i want to have the same color, not darker or lighter. also i was wondering if u guys copy ur textures to the folder of whatever file ur working on ? cause i have to as vray doesn't seem to be able to locate them alone (wich is weird ) does the resource collector work with vray ? any hel is appreciated, thank u very much
BrianKitts
to sample colors off the web using LWF you need to apply a 2.2 gamma correction to the sample. If you take an RGB value right off your screen and type that into max you are skipping over max's ability to apply the gamma correction. Checkout the "Color Correct" plugin on the following website http://www.cuneytozdas.com/software/3dsmax/ once installed you can place a "color correct" map in your diffuse channel and from within that maps options select your color and apply your gamma adjustment to get an exact match. For instance, if I sample the green in the CGA logo I get an RGB value of 112,156,0. If you key that into max it comes out too bright as your have noticed. But if you key in your gamma correction the resulting sample is a perfect match. Edited August 11, 2008 by BrianKitts

Parker1
Silly question...when using the CC plug-in do you have it installed on every render node? We have a 200+ machine farm and need to know if I need to write a script to install it on every node. Let me know. Thanks

RyanSpaulding
So THAT was the issue?!? I couldn't figure it out for the life of me so I always created a little 100x100 image with the color mapped to it and used that... This will be much easier. Thanks! BrianKitts
one more question though when u create textures from scratch in photoshop what am i supposed to do ? you don't have to do anything (anymore) in photoshop, let max do it for you by setting the input gamma for bitmaps to 2.2 in your the max preferences for gamma. This will globally apply the correction to all the maps you use for textures. Note: If you don't want to use the global correction you have that option when you select your texture as to if you want to override the max value. BrianKitts
since a couple of you are picking this up, I'll make another suggestion, a great plugin for sampling colors off your screen is the "Cool Picker" found here.... http://www.idigitalhouse.com/Tech/dh_tech.html (the max 9 version works in 2009 as well) you can drag select from the color selector and grab the RGB values off of any window visible on your screen. Makes it really easy to sample colors straight into max. Once you've placed the .dlu file in your plugins folder for max, boot max and in your general preferences change the color selector from the default. BTW I need to give credit for this whole process to Travis (CrazyHomelessGuy) who came up with this a couple years back. -bk
fadi3d
Brian this is so cool but drag selecting isn't working for me (max 2008 ) in fact dragging does'nt do anything sorry for being a trouble thanks
Derek Forreal
when i pick a color from the net it turnes out much lighter than i expect so what am i supposed to do ? doesn't anyone use the VrayColor map? just pick the map, set gamma correction to 2.2 and enter the colour values. does the Color Correct plugin have advantages?
