ronll
Straight HTML and CSS. Its easy and much more transparent than using a frontend like Dreamweaver. And there are really good tutorials all over the net. For instance, see http://wendypeck.com/css101.html which she calls a "No Crap Primer" for CSS (cascading style sheets). And just my opinion, but I would keep it simple. Forget the Flash and fancy Java scripts. Just takes longer for potential clients to load, if it works at all on their machine. For instance the iPhone will not show Flash and the iPhone is a pretty popular browser these days.
BrianG
Most hosting domains offer a page building interface that can get you a splash page up fast. Take a look Elizabeth's Castro's quick start books if you're going go it through straigh html/css. Also look at Airtight's simpler viewer to put up a nice looking portfolio fast. Hope this helps a bit. Edited August 11, 2008 by BrianG forgot a word
