AJLynn
You're right... my bad for injecting the snarky little comment there. This is not the place to open up that can of worms, and missed the point of the post it was responding to. More on-topic... is there an age limit for competing in the Games? That is, would this gymnast be disqualified for being too young? I really have no idea, but it just seems that when I would watch the Games in the past, the gymnasts all seemed awfully young... The rule is that they have to be at least 16, or turn 16 this (calendar) year. I'm pretty sure the rule uses the Western age system (so countries where a newborn is considered 1 and everybody's birthday is on the new year, so you can theoretically be 2 a couple days after you're born, wouldn't be allowed to use that system to gain an advantage). RyanSpaulding
I'd hate to take away a medal from a 14-year-old girl who's worked her ass off for it but... Well, if the 14 year old is lying, sounds like a pretty good life lesson to me.
Koper
dono if the age limit is is 16. there are two other athletes who are 14 and 12. the 14 year old is from britain, http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/BIO/Athlete/2/225172.shtml and the 12 year old(girl) is a swimmer from a small country in africa i think. I mean, why do people get soooo disapointed when the get silver, and to say the competitors are to young is kind of being bad loosers, isn't it? Now I cant realy say much, South Africa aint doing to hot, well..., thats an overstatement, but thats my 2cents
AJLynn
I don't know about diving, but it's been said several times that in women's gymnastics the minimum is 16. That really is the rule. It's not being sore losers, I'm perfectly happy with seeing Americans getting silver but since there are these rules people have to follow them and enforce them. When Marion Jones was disqualified for doping violations, they revoked her medals, and I would expect the same for somebody disqualified for any reason. RyanSpaulding
I think if someone/country blatantly disregards the rules, tries to cover it up, and there is sufficient evidence to investigate claims on the violation, simply calling attention to this isn't being a 'sore loser'. A legit silver is fine...but not a BS silver.
Koper
but hold on, where the americans girls supposed to get that silver yesterday? (i feel not) I only saw what the chinese and americans did, and that girl from america messed up big time, twice in fact, with her team mates also making some minor mistakes. I haven't seen any other countries, but if that is how you get a silver at the olympics then i think they must ban all sports that require judges. AJLynn
The mistakes were why they didn't get the gold in the end. The routines were otherwise really impressive - if not making mistakes were the only way to score points they'd just be doing boring easy routines. RyanSpaulding
Not to mention even organizers purposely iced the team captain in order to break he concentration, knowing it could be a domino effect.
AJLynn
I noticed that happened to a several competitors from a few countries in both mens and womens. There wasn't really any explanation as to why some judging stops were longer than others.
JonRashid
How come all you ever here are criticisms nowadays. Illusion or not the opening ceremony was spectacular and how that was achieved isn't really relevant. Almost everything we watch is illusion for entertainment. Just kick back and enjoy. AJLynn
No complaints about the opening ceremony. They couldn't get the helicopter shot they wanted (apparently there really were fireworks out there but they decided it wasn't safe to fly the helicopter through them) - so what, the whole production was freakin' spectacular. I still have no idea how they managed to pull off some of the things they did, like the 2008 people running in concentric circles.
Koper
I wasn't surprised when I heard that it was most cg with the fireworks, but it still was awesome, and most important, very creative.
Ky Lane
Given their human rights record, the way they're treating international journoulists, the fact they replaced the original olympic song singer with a prettier lip syncher... all I can say is... GO!

JonRashid
All seems very familiar to me. Seems quite similar to the Cuban missile crisis. It's curious how both the US and UK have automatically painted the Russians as the only guilty party in this.

Brian Cassil
No big deal....I just tried to redirect as we've been down thisd path before and it'll turn into a global warming-like discussion. Thank you, thank you, thank you. For nipping that in the bud on your own. Very mature and proffesional. Lets all try to keep this on topic and not turn this into a political rant. And on topic, I am big time into the olympics this year and not just for the yanks. Watching the Jamaican sprinters has been really jaw dropping. Usain Bolt is a God amoung ants. I don't necessarily like how he started chest pounding with 15 meters left in the 100 mainly becuase I would really have liked to see what his time would have been had he finished strong. 9.69 by jogging the last 20! Insane!!! As one of the announcers said he is in the realm of video games. Unearthly.
Nic H
lol and sorry but - what do you mean on topic? the olympics isnt just about sport. its really quiet petty / sad / bizzare that this kind of thing still happens anywhere, let alone a country thats hosting the biggest and most egalitarian celebration of sport and culture in the world. bloody ridiculous. Access to Apple's online iTunes Store has been blocked in China after it emerged that Olympic athletes have been downloading and possibly listening to a pro-Tibetan music album in a subtle act of protest against China's rule over the provinceImagine what would happen if chinese athletes were to hear this music? the dalai lama could possibly sweep into town and take over the nation. I hear he is an evil evil man. anyway that aside watchign Bolt is amazing, the guy had chicken nuggets for breakfast and still won! not human. RyanSpaulding
Misty May and Kerri Walsh rocked the house last night. Beat the China team for the gold so an extra thumbs up for beating China. Come to think of it...where have all the chinese posters been the last few weeks? Could CGA be blocked from within China? AJLynn
Whoa, good point. I don't think I've seen a post from China in at least a week. But maybe they're just busy watching the Olympics.
