LukeC
Hi guys, quick question to see if anyone is experiencing the same thing and or knows a solution: I'm finding after working in a scene for about half an hour that max starts to bog down and run really slowly. For example, my current scene is a 500k poly building that runs perfectly fine at 30+ fps when I open it, but after half an hour it drops to between 5 & 15fps. Its easily solved by just reloading the scene (interestingly i dont even have to restart max) and it works fine. As its frustrating to constantly have to re-open the file to keep it running smoothly, i'm seeking some answers. It makes sense that its a memory issue, but i don't know where fix it. I haven't had this problem in max 9 or 2008 with the same file.
Peter M. Gruhn
Sounds like a memory leak. Are you working with any third party plugins that might have been poorly tested?
LukeC
hmm nothing out of the ordinary running, i haven't installed my scripts / plugins yet into 2009 with the exception of vray.
Ky Lane
Have you tried disabling the orientation jiggys in the corners of the viewports? They use alot of resources. try this: 1. Close Autodesk 3ds Max 2009. 2. In the Autodesk 3ds Max 2009 root folder (Default path C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2009) open the \stdplugs folder in Windows® Explorer. 3. Locate the file called AutoCamMax.gup. 4. Right-click the file and select Rename. 5. Rename the file to AutoCamMax.gup.bak. 6. Restart Autodesk 3ds Max 2009. it’ll disable the viewcube. Let me know if that solves the problem. Crashes will happen less frequently at least.

BrianKitts
Also make sure you've installed the hotfix for 2009. This will install SP1 and the fix for the viewcube which causes alot of problems, but the viewcube used to cause crashing problems not slow downs. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=11601340&linkID=9241178 Ky's post is the hack to permanently disable the viewcube which someone put out before autodesk fixed it's crashing problem (yes they actually do that from time to time ), with the hotfix you shouldn't need to do that. But he is right about the resource thing.... Autodesk even admits it's a resource hog.
LukeC
I've currently got SP1 and vray SP2 installed - will look into the hack at somepoint today, when I get a moment
A.Mitov
LukeC, I had exactly the same problem with Max 2009. After working for a while, Max drops down to about 10-15 fps on scenes having under 30 000 polys. That's why I choosed to stay with 2008 - everything's perfect now. Handles very well even complex scenes. I am curious too what's happening with 2009.
LukeC
I'm still having the same persistent problem - unfortunately the studio is on 2009 so thats where i'll stay. I had a bit of a hunch that it could be the adaptive degradation tool, although this worked fine in max 9 but the update to it could have caused a problem. amer abidi
yup...exact same problem here... goes down to about 5 fps after 30 minutes or so... and back up to 30fps+ when re-opened! Sp1 installed, and no extra plugins but vray as well.
A.Mitov
I guess it's a bug in Max then. Autodesk better fix this as soon as possible.
Boing
don't know if this will help but if you have your undo levels way up it can consume a lot of memory, i had mine at 60 and it was crashing a lot, brought it down to 20 and now it only crashes a little........ LukeC
Mine is still only at 20 unfortunately. Infact I haven't had much of a chance to change anything (other then loading my old quad menu's) before I first encountered the issue
mmowry
Same problem here - slows down after awhile. No problems after save/re-open. Max2009 Design SP1, XP64, dual-quad-core xeon w/ 8Gb RAM, NO Vray installation. Michael
