LukeC
Hi guys, I'm just trying to seek a little bit of guidance as to what a suitable wage is in the Australian market. What would you expect for typical Architectural Vis specialist with 4-5yrs experience working large and small scale projects, animation knowledge, vray, autocad, post work etc etc skills in Melbourne? Basically I ask because I'm finding it hard to get a realistic idea of what my skills are worth as there are some surprisingly low (and varying) salaries around. I'm just wanting to have a firm (and realistic) wage idea in my head when talking to companies.
SandmanNinja
They'll probably go by your portfolio, and if you're on the young side - try to offer you a lower wage. Do you have a portfolio?
LukeC
I'm just looking for indicative prices of your typical folio quality - just trying to understand the wage bandings here, as surprisingly I'm finding wages much lower then when I was in Brisbane. To answer your question, yeah I do, but its not available currently as my website has taken a dive, so I am mid re-building it at the moment
Justin Hunt
funny I took a big wage dive when I moved from Melbourne to Brisbane. The rediculouse argument of "The cost of living is lower here" , Bull Wages do vary depending on if its with an arch viz firm or architectural. The former is shockingly bad and the latter is livable if they know what they are doing. Even with 13 years experience some places are offering uni student wages. Without seeing your work I'd say 5 years experience if around 50 to 60 K if your really good 70k. jhv
Ky Lane
Eleventy Billion Dollars. Yeah, it all varies as to your experience/portfolio/responsibility levels. Theres no real benchmark to go by.

Ky Lane
Dunno, Im pretty happy with my clients. They rarely argue about deadlines or price. Mind you, all of them have had run-ins with iDrawFast at some stage, so I think thats worked to my advantage.
Nic H
yeah i was being a bit flippant there. the place i used to work at would pick up heaps of stuff that idrawfast had attempted to do and failed miserably at. faceless souldess offices like that dont get much repeat work! mahorela
I think were all picking up work from Idrawslow........senior artists are around 60-80k and juniors are usually around the 40's from my experience.
LukeC
yeah i was thinking it was along the lines of 40-60k for junior to intermediate and 60k + for senior etc. Of course it depends on your folio and skill level, but just as a general rule of thumb. Like I said, i'm just surprised at the low wages in Melbourne (maybe i'm just in the wrong spot) and i'm trying to decide if I should pick up and head to another city or OS, the UK seems like the place to be at the moment.. SandmanNinja
I just wonder, with the internet, e-mail, and (if required) video conferencing, does it matter WHERE you are geographically located?
LukeC
to an extent it doesn't matter where your geographically located, and for that reason I wouldn't go to Dubai because the work is quite accessible from here (doesn't interest me, and I have my British Passport), but the work opportunities and wages vary from place to place.
