I think they are referring to the fact that the overall image is mid-tone prominent .What kind of color mapping system are you using? btw, your image sampling seems very low and the Hemispheric subdiv. value seem quite low also.

The roof seems a bit too lit imo.. You said it's a night render but the sky looks like it's dusk, therefore u'd have some orange color bleed over the whole image. You can control this by adjusting the White balance from V-ray Physical camera (assuming that you are using one)

Here,I have adjusted the color curve a bit. seems a bit better imo.

hey there a few rambling thoughts based on your screen shots...

Are you tryign to use vray light mat to light stuff up? 250 is a huge multiplier (unless you are using phys cam)

80/80 ius ridiculoulsly high, revert to around 40 / 25 with -5,-1 and adjust from there. Also put that primary bounce back to 1.

I reckon its the vray light mat thats forcing you to use such high GI values. try vray lights of standard spots w/vray shadows.

the scene looks like a gray day at the moment not a night scene.

id revert your colour mapping to linear or reinhard to start with, dont mess with the bright/dark multipliers either. also Id ditch that HDRI its not a night one and would be best left off.

start with your environment / indirect ambient colour - probably a dark blue / purple

get this looking good and add interior and exterior lights one by one so you can see how they affect the scene.

woaa.I've never seen settings like that ever. Messing with the primary bounces multiplier is not something I would recommend.. Lower the interpolation samples to 20 the hemispheric to 30-35 maybe 40. In the adaptive DMC turn the max subdivisions to 32 and and the clr thresh to 0.003.Turn off detail enhacement for now,and put the medium preset. You have to understand that those subidivions are NOT ONLY for the AA filter. It handles relfection also, shadows everything actually.and use V-ray Lanczos filter btw..

And,the most important thing of all, what kind of light do you want in this scene? is it noon? after noon? evening. night? Because right now it's very weird.the roof is way to lit..I think I said this before, and your image, again, lacks contrast ...

I see that u are using HDR...if it's a crappy one low res,it would reflect very ugly..so get rid of it in case it's low quality.

And yes,as Nicnic said..dont' mess out with dark and bright multipliers..Start with Rheindard with a burn value of 0.5 ...

thanks

so i guess i will actually have to cut holes for my lights rather than the surface applied lightmats i currently have.

does anyone have a way they like to cut circular openings like that other than messy little rough openings with the cut tool?

boolean..or pro boolean.Works very well in max 2008

i have not really used boolean since about max 7 because it would always eventually mess up my objects. maybe it works better now ill give it a try

wow i feel like a dummy sometimes on here i dont know ANYONE irl who uses this software so sometimes i need a reality check with my settings and stuff....its like if your completely isolated and talking to yourself and you think your acting normal but your not

THERE you go! Much much better... It was interesting to be able to trace the process thru this thread. My only crits would be to maybe add some flavor to the patio and landscaping in the very forground... maybe a lounge chair on the patio on the far side of the pool, with an indication of a step to get down out of the house [it looks like a BIG step right now]. You could add a little bit of contrast in the plants in the forground on either side of the patio too, as long as it doesnt distract from the rest of the image.

Are YOU happy with it now?

Good Job!
