Fry w/ Rhino

I've been following the development of Fry with great interest. I finally ownloaded the demo and played with it VERY briefly but I have a few questions i couldn't find the answer to on my own. I wasn't able to crack HOW the instancing works exactly from Rhino. You create a box then tag it with the instance tool and somehow connect it/ reference to another file, right? I wasn't successful in getting this to work.

I do work for event planners regularly so being able to take advantage of instancing a table set up 50-100 times would be great.

Also, does the stand alone app have any wireframe preview capabilities?

Hi Nelson,

If you create a block with your place setting, then create very simple geometry for an additional setting (like a plane or triangle), and make it an instance with the Fryrender Object Properties function (in object properties) by checking Instance and type in the name of the block it references in the space beside the checkbox. Then copy that plane wherever you want an additional place setting.

Do you mean, can it render a hidden line wireframe? Like this:

lines_001.jpg

Fryrender has a Toon Core that is a separate engine from the unbiased, physically correct one. From the fryrender Render configuration, pick FRYRENDER Toon Core as the Kernel. To get the effect in my attachment, I uncheck everything except for Outline and play with the max and min values.

Ah, very helpful. I'll give that a try this weekend. So all the materials have to be assigned inside the block, correct?

I meant do you get to see a wireframe preview of the shot in the standalone, similar to what you'd see in rhino, so that you can tweak the shot a bit. Move the camera around, etc. Or do you have to go back into rhino to do that?

Yes, your source block should be how you want all the instances to look. You can rotate your instances (I'm pretty sure).

Oh yes. There is a 3d Viewport in the fryrender console that has Walkthrough camera controls. You can also adjust the focus plane and select objects there. You Fetch the camera you wish to view (if it is other than the current one), and once you make your viewport alterations, you Hold the settings (port them back to a selected camera). I will usually have more that one camera and will put the changes to one besides the current one.

For the toon render, those are actual floor boards. But toon lines and the AO channel (ambient occlusion) will show bump and displacement. Though it is very subtle, because the toon lines has a high threshold.
