In my opinion, Avast! does what it says on the tin: It stops viruses without slowing my computer down uncessasarily. And it plays nice with XP64.

It only the stops the viruses it knows about, There is a review somewhere on how many viruses gotten by certain programs, Avast let a good few of them by.

...So, ....no matter what Microsoft says or does, I don't see the majority business community budging on their reluctance to upgrade to Vista any time soon. So, I would have to guess that Microsoft will push harder to get the next version of their OS out. This probably means it will have a ton of bugs also.

I think they really, really need to do some housekeeping/cleaning on Windows. It's waaaaay too bloated. Apple's taking a pretty sensible approach to their next version - they've already told us to expect almost no new features, and they've barely changed the name (from Leopard to Snow Leopard). It's going to be a rewrite of some core components, for fixes and API updates and to get up to speed on some things like coprocessing on the GPU. If Microsoft spent a year doing that they could probably drop 5 gigs from the Vista install and make it much more stable and faster - and let's face it, Windows needs this kind of work much more than OSX, which already threw out the old code in the basement a few times in the last decade - but instead the next version is going to be Vista plus stuff.
