I have a copy of it still sitting in a box....if only I had the time to start my review...argg. Is there anything in particular that you wanted to know? I've used MAX6 for a while now, so I can probably answer any questions you had.

Discreet sure did well with that PDF. I think that is the first doc that does not resemble marketing but rather real usable end-user info. Go Discreet!

I should get my upgrades delivered today but I can't upgrade until I finish the job that im working on.

Will have a mess about with it soon tho... being a Discreet certified instructor im sure someone will ask me to do upgrade training.

Jeff were you a beta tester for max? Thought you hated the program orangeno

No I definetly don't hate the program, I just don't think it works well for the way I currently work. But I'm going to change that (the way I work) so I can use MAX more often.

I've wanted to use MAX for a long time, but there are a number of things that prevent me from working efficiently with it.

Well first impressions:

I must say this release of MAX is very stable and smooth. Everything seems so much smoother than 5.1 (pannning, drawing splines, moving objects, UVW modifing). I've loaded up models that used previous releases (moderate models with 500,000+ face count) and it just runs so smooth. Seems like discreet really listening to those "fix the bugs" people in their forums. The new layer manager is much easier to use than the one in max5. I had to go in the cutsomize user interface to tweak out my old keyboard shortcuts (some have changed) but that was no biggie.

Anyone else starting playing with Max 6 yet please post your impressions here. I've not used it in production yet (using Vray with Max 5 still) but will soon. Post away.

What are those things Jeff? Just curious. I was reluctant to use Max (first Viz than moved to Max) after using FormZ for 4 months.

I heard the same thing. How do you like Max 6 so far? I can't get over how stable it is. Hasn't dumped on my once (yet), even on a 700,000 faces scene. Gotta give it some more muscle to chew - then we'll see if it crashes. I bet once I start loading plugins it will crash.

Hmmm seems OK to me, hasn't crashed here yet either but then again Max 5 hardly ever crashed and if it did it was usually my fault for doing something stupid (like use radiosity :p ).

Try the boolians... I swear they seem to work a lot better now :D

Mentalray is really nice but slllloooooooowwww, Reactor and Dynamics are amazing, the layer manager is handy and the shell modifier is really cool.

I still haven't got round to using the render elements tho.

Yes - they new layer manager is much better. In max 5.1 I had to keep a shrotcut to the maxstart.cui on my desktop, opening it everytime after using max and deleting out garbage code that was added to the layers drop down window. There was a bug that keeps adding code everytime you closed Max 5 eventually making your layer drop down disappear. Only way I could keep it there was to edit the code everytime. Annoying as hell.

Mental Ray is slow (for final quality renders). I will still use VRay, king of Max raytrace.

Reactor will come in handy for lots of viz people when making curtains, bed sheets, and other similiar objects. I don't think I'll be using dynamics much - just to play.

The shell modifier basically replaces (with extras) the solidfy script I was using in Max5.

What ?? TAB FEATURE IS GONE? (has discreet gone insane?)

If that feature is gone, I guess next version of VIZ will not have that feature... and sadly, that's the best (and most sane) feature of MAX... without that, MAX UI looks like a hodgepodge of stick-together disorganised goobastic amphibious s@#$@$............

What are ppl going to do now?..

Ha! I didn't know they were "tearable". No wonder everyone's got their undies in a knot about it. :)
