creating pier and post

You'll need two things, both related to dimensions. The first would be a Height parameter attached to a dimension to adjust the height of the post. Next you'll need to constrain the pier to a certain height based on a location in the family. It's a fairly basic family, it's just a matter of putting the dimensions in the correct spots and knowing how to add a parameter to a dimension. If you need help just let me know, I can likely help out.

ok,

i took a floor template created pier using a profile

then a post using generic model, then added a parameter using distance for the post..

but when the object is placed you need a floor

and the post dist must put in element properties

no grip to move it.... on a lot that is not level

this is not ideal in that one would have to find all the post lenghts first the type it in would be nice for the top of the post just to go up to an constriant...

just hacking out a trial now...

Now you completely lost me!

For some reason I was thinking of some fishing pier with posts, like a handrail!!!

Could you do a sketch in plan and section of your "Pier and Post" with the dimensions you'd like to control?

You may have to set up Reference planes, dimension and label them, and then attach your geometry (extrusions and Blends) to the Reference Planes for them to follow it.

Check attached.

actually all i was hoping for is after the pier and post is placed the the top of the post could be constrained to a level like bottom of grider. then the top of the post would always be the right hieght no matter where the peir is.... this would work so nice especially on a sloped lot where all the foundation piers are a different distances from the grider but the top of the posts are on the same plane... currently don't see that feature in the element properties...

low surf today

Ray,

The Family Template comes with the Reference Level where the Family will be inserted. Use Dimensions/Labels to control the behaviour of the Pier.

In the attached family you'll find that the Pier dimensions are controlled through the Type variables, while the Post length can be controlled individually. In Elevation you'll even find a grip to control its length.
