JDillon
Guys, don't worry about the future and financial savings. Google will take care of us.. Why not, they give out free 3d software. Ahh yes, GoogleHealth and the 401(Google). What is good for Google is good for America (maybe even the world). Thank You, Jason Dillon
MesaPrs
OK I wasn't expecting this post to explode like this! I guess one major issue is whether I should stay small or go big - I do have a rudimentary business plan but it's only to support me as a freelance, mostly one-man operation. Most likely I would not consider growing into a larger business, as this is mainly an artistic pursuit. I'm not a businessman and would hate managing too large a group of people. I don't expect to have only one career if I can describe it that way, and don't understand how I would be left without an exit strategy (meaning I expect to develop other forms of income over time...). But thanks for warning me! And I do expect to have to be on top of changes in the industry and technology - I'm a computer nerd so it'll be fun . Landrvr1, thanks for telling it like it is! The non-arch stuff is going away and I'm putting together a real layout that looks good so far. Still using a cheeseball "Yahoo Site Builder" app but it should turn out looking more professional. Flash in the near future and Buckethead rocks very much. Anyways thanks everyone for all the advice, it's invaluable and good to know - nobody was "too rough". I really appreciate all the help. MesaPrs
Hey I do actually live in Googleland (Mountain View). I think I'm already taken care of! Seriously, Google installed Wi-Fi transmitters on apparently every single streetlamp in the city here. And I hear their campus is a fully sustainable ecosystem with restaurants, a fallout shelter and mini-golf. I don't think they ever leave.
SandmanNinja
In Australia, we have a "Super" or Superannuation. I've been paying into it for a while, as have my past employers. I think it would be like the 401K in the States. If I'm able to get a freelance ArchViz busingess going and sustainable, then I'd continue the Super contributions (I'd have to increase them, as there would be no Employer contributions). I'm 43 and if I retire when I'm 65, then I'll have a nest egg stashed away. Plus my house should be paid for by then. That's my basic exit strategy - Super and then sell my house/land and move to Queensland. John, that Google stuff sounds amazing!
MesaPrs
well, the remark about the wi-fi transmitters is actually true. Don't know about the other part...
Intsource
Make a relationship with the software supplier of yours, they will be looking after your subscription and most likely be looking after the subscriptions of Architecture practises using AutoCAD and Revit.
