Dots in Glossy Reflection/Refraction

I'm a beginner in mental ray (with 3ds max) and having a lot of problems with glossy reflection/refraction. Usually I just avoid them altogether but at some point I need to have these effects. The problem is whenever I use them, I get white dotty artifacts.

Attached is a draft rendering (draft FG) with daylight system and interior lighting (several free area lights with low samples size). I know there are dots also on the other surfaces but they look close to what they are and their problem gone with higher lighting samples settings and higher FG settings. The glossy stuff, however, will stay dotty like such (the box volumes inside red ellipse marker) no matter the settings. The object should be semi transparent glossy reflection as well as refraction.

If I enable the "Fast (interpolate)" (in the material settings) the dots turn into white bright squares that look even worse. If I enable Highlights+FG only, it will remove the artifacts but the surface will look kind of dull (under saturated).

At some point I was able to produce clean renderings but I couldn't remember the settings (and I don't have access to the file anymore).

I'm on 3ds max 2008.

Any insights, please? I think I have read other threads and tried to follow them and still no luck, unless I missed something...

Thank you!
