rendering trouble

i have a building shell in autocad architecture, inside this shell i wish to place several machines which are xref'd from another dwg.

 

my problem is that when it comes to rendering, the shell will render on its own with no problem.

 

if i then open the other dwg and render numerous machines it renders fine

 

the problem is when i xref the machines into the building shell dwg and then try to render??

 

i get the good old famous FATAL ERROR message, and i can't figure out why.

 

shell renders, machines render, shell and xref machines don't render
