New Depth Technique

If anyone saw my last 'Must See' post where photographs are being used to increase detail in video footage, and provide extra info for other effects. Then this new link to this technique by a university in manchester should start a revolution in the way we texture our work... Great news for those of us that can't afford a laser scanner.

I know there is a ZDepth Camera, but What I want to know is why cant we get camera's to use the old sonar autofocus to record zdepth info, or something similar.
