Trissel
Hello Cg-ers, Im very happy using Vray and I think its the best rendering engine out there! I have my own renderfarm and everything is working fine. But now I'm going to work from different locations than my renderfarm. This gives me a problem with my license. Since I only have one dongle, I cant work and use the renderfarm at the same time. My renderfarm consists of 9 pc's and I have one laptop as a workstation so the number of licenses is right. Is there a solution to fix this without buying another full license including a dongle? Many thanks already.
BrianKitts
I thought I heard mention once that it was possible to access your dongle via HTTP, but I've never heard of anyone doing it. If you create a VPN with with network containing the computer with your dongle you would be able to access your license that way. (assuming it's legal under chaosgroup's licensing)
Trissel
Yes I know, I saw that you can fill in "Online Authorization Settings" in the "Vray license server settings". But this is far from ideal, depending on 2 internet connections. If one breaks down I loose my license and cant work. I think this is a strange approach to fix this problem since this is professional software and the users which use them are tied to deadlines. It would (for me at least) be better to split the dongle in to one USB dongle with the gui license and one with the renderlicenses. Or even better, being able to backup your original dongle. This would also eliminate the problem with the donglle breaking down (or loosing it). I understand that Chaosgroup is dealing with a piracy issue here but that should not affect there paying customers.
Trick
When using a renderfarm the VRay dongle is ONLY neccessary to assign jobs from inside Max to the manager. Once jobs are assigned, you can disconnect the dongle and take it home with you. I have been doing this since there actually WAS a dongle. In concreto: the VRay UI needs the dongle and when starting up the license server it needs it too !! Edited September 5, 2008 by Trick
Trissel
You're absolutely right Trick! This is great. But strange that it didn't before. I just updated to Vray sp2, maybe it has something to do with that. Thanks everybody!
