Tommy Burns
Hi Just use the none material in the material overide slot and turn off all your physical lights or check out subset of scene shader
arkinel
Thanks for your response. I tried the material overide but it doesn't work without lights, it works with lights but there are shades, highlights and shadows. don't understand about the scene shader. what do you mean by that? sorry to tell you that i am not an advance user of 3dmax. thank you for your help. Tommy Burns
Have a look at this for subset of scene there is a link to Jeff pattons blog about unhiding this feature. It is not hidden in 2009 http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/28975-multi-passing.html
Peter M. Gruhn
I made a quick ten boxes and a quick ten materials. Applied. Rendered Material ID element and got the attached. So _I_ think there is a way and wonder why yours did not work. It looks like you only have 2 material IDs assigned.
arkinel
Hi Peter, maybe my settings is different from yours. I tried also to create new scene with boxes and applied materials to it, but i still get the result i want. jfmonod
Hi, I am trying to do the same thing with rendering elements by material ID with a Revit model exported to Max thru FBX. This creates Pro-Materials in Max to which I assign material IDs. I want to render and have a Matte for varying wall materials, trims, windows and so forth for use in Photoshop. However my Matte render element consistently comes out blank. I can do it by using the Select Objects option in Matte, but materials don't work. Any idea why ? frank1331
On the materials editor, there is a box with numbers 0-15 which controls the material ID channel. You need to set each material to a separate material ID. For example floor to #1 , glass to #2, etc. Then when you render, you will get the different colored objects. jfmonod
Thanks muchly frank1331. I did manage to find exactly what you said from a different source, so I am now in deep Photoshop compositing territory. A must for when you're dealing with people who are undecisive with colors. Finding that "Material ID" box in the materials editor panel takes some doing the first time around tho : ) I appreciate the help.
Tommy Burns
Jean For what you want to do "subset of scene" is exactly what you need. You should look it up I use it all the time for exactly the same thing. Tommy
