STRAT
you need to render the image out in a format that supports alpha channels. like maybe TIFF or TGA for example. Then when you open up your image in photoshop you be able to isolate the alpha channel to be able to work on that individually.

SandmanNinja
from my notes: adding a background photo to a rendered scene 01) start with .TGA file with Alpha Channel from a rendered scene in Max 02) make a copy of the original layer and hide the original layer 03) open the background image - adjust the size to fit the rendered image 04) make a new (empty) layer in the rendered image - move it BELOW the rendered image 05) click back on the rendered image layer 06) [ignore this blank line] 07) click on Channels tab 08) make all layers visible 09) click on alpha channel 10) click Load Channel as Selection 11) Click on Layers Tab 12) Selection -> Invert 13) Edit -> cut, or just press the DEL key 14) marquee and select the background image, copy, then past it into rendered image in a new (empty) layer 15) The background will now be visible through the windowsHope it helps. SandmanNinja
No worries... I tend to write things in "Dummy 101" for myself... And I removed a step (step #6) and didn't feel like renumbering the following steps to match. I'm using Photoshop CS3, but have a feeling that this should work for CS1 (probably) and CS2.
