Sketchup Hardware problems

I recently got this new pc at work. I work a lot in Sketchup and 3D Max. Now, 3D Max is running very smooth with no problems at all. Though when I use Sketchup and open a bit complex model, sketchup is extremely slow and I can barely work.

I tried hardware acceleration, and it actually helps a LOT. But the problem is that I get an error (driver crash) every 10~15 minutes with eventually Sketchup crashing too.

I had a GeForce 7200GO (256 MB) in my old laptop, with no problems at all. Now i'm using GeForce 8600GS (515 MB).

I tried updating drivers, without succes. And oh, i'm on Vista.

EDIT:

After playing with some preferences for a bit, I solved the problem.

Try Nvidia GeForce 169.21 drivers. You may have to google search for this. This driver has solved a lot of problems for me in SketchUP.

Hope this helps

With best regards

PRSS

Thanks! I just downloaded and installed the driver. I'll try using Sketchup and Google Earth at once, because I have the feeling it crashes more often when using at the same time. Also trying anti-alias 4x to push the card/driver to the limit.

Edit:

Nope, it's not helping. It just crashed again so it MUST be the hardware. My boss is contacting the seller today.

My gut instinct is that if 3ds Max works FINE with it, then it's a dodgy program or installation.

Max really taxes your system. Max is a heftier program than Sketchup.

I really doubt it's the hardware.

I suggest:

uninstall Sketchup

scandisk and defrag your hard drive

do a virus/spyware scan

power off and on

then

reinstall sketchup

I really don't think that's the problem. My colleague has the same issues with the same system.

Are they the same identicle system? Were they ghosted from the same image?

A lot of IT shops do that - make a 'perfect' image and when something goes wrong, whip out the ghost disk and re-image it.

Not the same thing as re-installing.

Just an idea - it's just weird that the hardware behaves properly with a program that's harder on the system.

They are the same systems, but not the same image. I found another driver, so i'm trying it out again. Supposedly it fixes some compatibility problems in 3D software. Which software exactly, they didn't tell.

Oh well, I guess it's a matter of trying different drivers. If that won't help, eventually call the shop.

Edit:

I might have found a working driver. So far, the driver nor SketchUp hasn't crashed.

You can find the latest drivers for your laptop graphical card on the laptopvideo2go website. I had similar speed issues in the past using sketchup. The laptopvideo2go solved it for me.

I'm using a desktop pc now. My laptop had no problems at all.

The new driver seems to be working well. I didn't have a single crash so far.

Robin, What exactly is the issue when you are running Sketch-up? Could you please take a screen shot and post it.

Like i said, there are no more problems. The new driver i downloaded fixed the problem.

The problem was, however, the driver kept on crashing and when it did, SketchUp crashed too. It's all fixed now.
